Tourist Profile
Lullingstone One of England’s oldest family estates dating back to the
time of Domesday, Lullingstone Castle is a magnet for both history and horticulture enthusiasts. Writer and broadcaster Tom Hart Dyke, who is heir to the
castle, shot to prominence in 2000 when he was kidnapped in the Panamanian jungle on a plant hunting expedition. While held hostage for nine months. Tom designed his dream garden. Since his return he has been busy building the World Garden containing plants he has collected from all over the globe and planted in their respective “countries”. The project was filmed as a BBC series and the garden has attracted a steady stream of visitors since it opened in 2005. Tom has also been working hard to save his birthright.
Frequented by Henry VIII and a favourite of Queen Anne, Lullingstone has been home to the Hart-Dykes for 20 generations.
Tonbridge Surely one of the grandest council offices in Kent,
Tonbridge Castle was founded following the Norman Conquest when Richard Fitz Gilbert was granted land to guard the crossing of the River Medway. The castle was not lived in
between 1521 and the late 18th century apart from a brief spell during the civil war, and the mansion was added in 1793. The site was bought by
Tonbridge and Malling Council in 1900, which now uses the mansion as offices with the grounds as a public park.

Hever Located in the village of Hever, near Edenbridge, the castle is a popular tourist attraction, famed for its links with Anne Boleyn, and Henry VIII. Hever Castle began as a country house in the 13th century and was the seat of the Boleyn family from 1462 to 1539. Anne spent her early youth there and the site later came into the possession of Henry’s fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. As well as the castle’s fascinating history, visitors are drawn by its mazes, gardens and lake. In 1903, the site was acquired and restored by the American millionaire William Waldorf Astor who used it as a family resdeince.
Westenhanger When the Forge family purchased Westenhanger Castle in
1996, this scheduled ancient monument was listed on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk register. The manor house is thought to have been strengthened in response to threats of attack from France in the 14th century. Three hundred years later, it was one of the largest houses in Kent. However, in 1701, much of it was taken down and the site fell into neglect. Preserving the remains for future generations was a daunting challenge for the current owners who have been given expert guidance and financial help from English Heritage to repair and restore the ancient stonework over eight phases.
