Town Profile

Where to visit Cranbrook is just three miles from the village of

Sissinghurst, the site of arguably the most famous 20th century garden in England.

The garden, created by novelist Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson, is in fact a series of some 10

separate gardens, all delightfully different. Walls and hedges separate the gardens, giving the visitor the impression of peace and seclusion. The gardens are in the ruin of an Elizabethan house, set in the middle of its own woods, streams and farmland and with long views on all sides across the fields and meadows of the Kentish landscape.

Also nearby, visitors can take a trip on the beautifully

restored steam trains on the Tenterden to Bodiam line, visit Bodiam Castle or Rolvenden's Historic Vehicles Collection, try the wines at Biddenden or Tenterden vineyards, or walk among the pine trees of Bedgebury Pinetum, England's national collection of conifers.

Cranbrook is a popular stop-off point for walkers on the High Weald Landscape Trail, which runs from Horsham to Rye.

Where to stay

Cranbrook offers a good range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, whether in the heart of town or in one of the outlying villages.

The George Hotel dates back to 1300 and was visited

by Queen Elizabeth in 1573. Flanked by two full suits of armour, an impressive staircase leads up to 12 individually-designed rooms, including the one where Elizabeth spent the night, which combine period features with striking contemporary décor.

Church Gates is another historic bed and breakfast.

Left: Nearby Benenden School occupies a Victorian mansion in 250 acres of grounds, which are partly accessible to the public along the High Weald Landscape Trail.
