Caps & Immunities Bear in mind also these folks labor under the curse of having
to work with a bunch of trial lawyers, each of whom believes he or she is right 80% of the time, and, with regard to the other 20%, claims the other side for who “just doesn’t get it.” Ten there are all the committee chairs, especially Eric
Schloss and John Cord, for the many well-attended, widely- praise seminars. I want to give special mention to Laura Zois, the chair of our Women’s Caucus. Tis newly-convened body reflects our commitment to making sure that our organization is not only diverse, but also provides a mechanism by which the voice of everyone group can be heard. Bruce Plaxen, our PAC Chair, and Wayne Willoughby,
our Legislative Committee Chair, are two former presidents. Forsaking General Douglas Macarthur’s famous phrase, unlike old soldiers, they did not “fade away.” Rather, almost daily, I was able to call upon them when the going got tough. When, for example, so called “tort reformers,” planted an article in the Baltimore Sun that rivaled Orson Wells’ War of the Worlds hoax, Wayne in short time was able to pen a response that set the record straight. Tis has been one of the most rewarding years of my life,
and I am grateful for your having placed your trust in me. My hope is that I have earned it. You, especially those who pitched in and helped when I called, or wrote a check for fundraiser, contributed to making this a banner year.
Let me also express my gratitude for those of you, during
my term, who tried a case, or turned down and offer because you refused to accept the unacceptable. You took a stand, and thereby expressed the highest quality of a trial lawyer: a willingness to go to the mat if need be to get justice for someone who trusted you with his or her case. And so it goes. But this last year is but a chapter in
my involvement in the MAJ. Like the past presidents who went before me, I am not going anywhere. Perhaps Winston Churchill said it best: “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
Biography Robert J. Zarbin (Te Jaklitsch Law Group) received his JD
from Loyola University School of Law. He is President of MAJ and is a member of the President's Club as an Eagle. Mr. Zarbin is the past Chair of MAJ's Workers' Compensation Section and Legislative Committee. He is a member of the Bar Association of Baltimore City, the Baltimore County Bar Association, the Prince George's County Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association and the American Association for Justice (AAJ). Mr. Zarbin has been a guest lecturer at both MAJ and AAJ conferences. His practice concentrates in personal injury, product liability, and workers' compensation.
