• All of us have multiple resumes; make sure that you send the right one. Also, you should send it, avoid haveing someone in another office send it. Your resume is the employer’s first impression. Many emails and faxes can be traced back to some unusual places and become your “first impression,” so if you are employed and looking, send your resume after work, on the weekends, or during your lunch break from a location other than your current employer’s.


• Use your job boards effectively. Te internet has thousands of job boards, so you want to choose those that get you connected to the right potential employers. Find state-based or profession-specific job boards. National job boards bring a lot of your completion to the prospective employer. Using targeted job boards tends to decrease the number of your competitors.





If you are not sure if this is the right candidate, ask him or her to work for you for a day or week at a consultant’s pay rate.


• Once on board, make sure that your internal orientation process provides the maximum amount of information and training necessary to make this new employee the most efficient and comfortable as possible.

I personally


know many professionals out of work for the past two years. Tey are trying to get by and hit the streets constantly. All I can say is be diligent: the right job is out there for you. I hope the insights from an employer’s perspective helps.


Responding to Advertisements:


• Responding to print or on-line advertising is very time consuming. You don’t want to waste your time or the time of a prospective employer responding to every advertisement. If something looks promising, conduct your own research and respond to the positions you know you are interested in, weighing:

• Headhunters can be your friend or foe. Do not sign with someone that charges you a fee – you knew that right? Interview with as many headhunters as you can before you sign with one. Once you do, remember the headhunter should be working to get you placed. If you do not hear from the headhunter on a regular basis, send a reminder that you are still looking. However, do not send too many reminders or you will be labeled a pest. network,

and you would be amazed how many people (professionals and personal contacts) know of a job but “forget” to mention it to you. Remember, your job search is not on the top of their list. It is your job to make it the top of their list.


Responding to Job Postings:


• Don’t waste your time responding to all job postings. Face it, some are just not worth your response. After all, you don’t want just a J-O-B: you want a job that will showcase your experiences, and one that you can grow with and develop further skills. Research the job before responding.


• Tere are


ways to research even the best of those that are anonymous. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t find them; there may be a reason the organization wants to be anonymous. Just let it go and respond to the others that offer potential.


• Be realistic. Tere are hundreds of other candidates vying for the same position. You are a great person
