94 12th March 2011 letters to the editor

SIR – There has been much criticism on your letters page of the BBC programme The Antiques Road Trip. The only favourable letter was from K.D. Antiques of Chester who took part in the programme. My antiques centre, St Martin’s

Antiques in Stamford, also took part. The fi rst that I knew about a possible

visit from BBC2 was when a ‘customer’ revealed themselves to be a location scout for the show. A subsequent phone call confi rmed

an agreeable date for fi lming and a few months later David Barby and Philip Serrell

arrived to seek out a bargain. Filming took place over two days, one for Barby, one for Serrell. Theirs was no fl ying visit. They were at the centre for several hours each day. Now you might think that a fi lm crew

in an antique centre is like a bull in a china shop, but these days a crew consists of no more than a cameraman/director and a young producer/pa. The new lightweight digital cameras enable one person to set up each shot and be responsible for sound and lighting, so the actual running of the centre and numerous shoppers was unaffected by the event.

She said it like it was

SIR – re Grammar grump, (last week’s Letters) talking of ending sentences with prepositions reminds me of the young nurse many years ago who was deputed to read to a professor with a blinding eye infection, but who had to bone up on a lecture he was due to give upon his release from hospital. She read his textbook beautifully, but was unable to understand a word of it. Her

frustration at her own ignorance eventually got the better of her, and she slammed the book on the table uttering: “Oh! What do you want to pick on a book like this to be read to from out of with for.”

Robin Butler Butler’s Antiques

Both experts were extremely

complimentary about the centre and the stock. David Barby appeared to be the more traditional of the two, demonstrating a keenness for silver. His fi nal choice was for an elegant, silver, cocktail swizzle stick. Despite his gentlemanly charm, his negotiating skills were ably tested by Tina Higgins, an old hand, being a staff member since the centre opened in 1993. Eventually a fair price was agreed. Philip Serrell was on the look-out for

“something quirky” so the eclectic choice in the centre suited him well. He eventually chose a set of bowls in a leather case and some apothecary bottles. While the task for the experts is to sell

their items for a profi t at auction, both Barby and Serrell conducted themselves in a most gentlemanly manner. Some of the negotiating in the

new series seems quite harsh. There is a feeling that the presence of a fi lm crew ‘encourages’ dealers to drop their prices. Isn’t it more likely that the dealer appreciates the value of free publicity and has little concern about the loss of a few pounds in return?

ivan macquisten email: editorial@atgmedia.com TV crew couldn’t have been better behaved Our footfall increased considerably

after the programme with many people coming from quite a distance having “seen us on the telly”. Experts and crew treated us and the

centre with respect throughout. And we must have done something

right too, because a couple of days after fi lming two of the crew popped back to purchase items from the centre for themselves!

CHISWICK Auctions are set to sell one of the most important early paintings by the German Expressionist Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966) to have come to market in recent years.

The authenticity of the painting,

which slipped through the hands of both Sotheby’s and Christie’s, has recently been confirmed after months of research led by the West London auctioneers under the guidance of the leading academic in the field. It is estimated to

The 2ft 6in x 2ft (75 x 60cm) painting, provisionally titled The Miners, depicts the growing unrest that spread among the coal miners of Eastern Prussia and Poland in the spring and summer of 1912,

rose decoration would have been a commission for one of the palaces of the Qianlong Emperor (1736- 1795), probably the Summer Palace or the Forbidden City. According to the world’s

leading dealers and collectors, it is the best object of its type to be seen on the market in decades, but it also chimes perfectly with current Chinese taste that values pieces from this period above all others. Peter Bainbridge, the

auctioneer, who runs a typical local auction room, is likely to have become a multi-millionaire himself as a result of the sale. His buyer’s premium for this sale was 20 per cent, or £8.6m, while he could have charged the vendors anything up to 17.5 per cent, or just over £7.5m, to sell it.

Left: the record-breaking Ruislip yang cai, distinctive for its reticulated double-walled construction, combines various differing decorative elements in a manner typical of Tang Ying’s directorship of the Imperial manufactory at Jingdezhen during the early years of the reign of the Qianlong emperor – a period of remarkable technical achievement.

It is the perfect expression of current Chinese taste with a recent exhibition at the National Palace Museum, Taipei titled Stunning Decorative Porcelains from the Ch’ien-lung Reign focusing upon a number of pieces of this type in the collection. Quite how an

acknowledged

imperial masterpiece reached Middlesex is unknown but it probably left China soon after the end of the Second Opium War in 1860 when the Summer Palace was sacked by British troops. It had been acquired in the 1930s by the late uncle of the vendor who lived in a bungalow in Pinner, North West

London. The vendor had no knowledge of

its true worth.
