To Russia with love…


THERE is no doubting how highly Russians prize art and antiques from their own country, and they are certainly willing to pay handsomely to own something of their own heritage. But how interested are they in British antiques?


One person who is keen to find out


and foster Russian interest our antiques trade is LAPADA’s chief executive Sarah Percy-Davis. In March last year, she was invited on a trip to Moscow organised by the department of UK Trade & Investment to promote various British luxury lifestyle industries, such as fashion, interior design and art and antiques. This year Sarah will return under her


own steam with 12 LAPADA members for a one day event on March 22, titled Mission to Moscow, with the aim of promoting the British antiques trade by building relationships with new and existing contacts. In LAPADA’s 2010 membership survey,


released last week, only one per cent of LAPADA members reported doing business with Russia (albeit a rise from zero in 2009). However Sarah Percy-Davis believes strongly that there is a market in Russia for British antiques, but that stringent and convoluted import and export laws have made trading with the country difficult. Mission to Moscow is intended as a PR and networking exercise to help overcome such hurdles. The event will take place at the British


Ambassador’s private residence by permission of Dame Anne Pringle, and the invitation list includes the Russian press and interior designers, as well as VIPs and private buyers. The 12 dealers will be accompanied by the interior designer Lady Henrietta Spencer- Churchill and Robin Duthy, managing


director of Art Market Research London. Once again the trip has the financial


backing of UK Trade & Investment, and LAPADA is working with Kollection, a Moscow-based luxury interior design agency run by Natalia Legotina, who will be inviting some of their trade and private clients to the event. The 12 participating LAPADA


members, each of whom will take one item to the event, are: Billiard Room Ltd from Somerset, Meissen and Oriental art specialist David Brower Antiques and 19th century furniture dealers Butchoff, both from Kensington Church Street, the Oxfordshire furniture dealers Hallidays Fine Antiques and W.R. Harvey & Co, Hatchwell Antiques of London’s King’s Road with furniture and aeronautica, Lucy Johnson of London with 17th century furniture and Modern British art, Mayfair Gallery with works of art, Kevin Page Oriental Art of Camden Passage, Japanese art dealers Rutherston & Bandini of St. James’s, Trinity House Paintings from Maddox Street, London with 19th and 20th century pictures, and Wick Antiques from Hampshire with 18th and 19th

All objects taken on the Mission will be imported on a temporary import licence and, although they will be for sale, if sold to a Russian resident they would have to be temporarily exported to a neighbouring country before being re-imported on a permanent licence – an example of the phenomenally complicated nature of Russia’s import and export laws.

reception to which Russian collectors and VIPs will be invited to meet the British dealers. Delegates will also receive Embassy staff briefings on trading with Russia, as well as assistance with introduction to private and commercial buyers.

1. Where are you based? In the Travertine Marble Holts Arcade of India Buildings in Liverpool. 2. What do you deal in? I love Art Deco and the applied arts, but as a rule, just things I like. 3. How long have you been dealing? 21 years in the trade and 15 years at India Buildings. 4. Do you do any fairs? Not any more, rightly or wrongly, I do my best to cater for my loyal clientele who have supported me over the years. 5. What was your first job? Milk boy, paper lad, then I served an apprenticeship as a carpenter which now benefits me with some good cabinet making skills and saves me a packet. 6. Best thing about being a dealer? To make a living while having the freedom and knowledge that you never stop learning in a profession full of amazing characters, be they trade or public, and also being able, even for a short time, to be a custodian of history. 7. And the worst? Old radios found in lofts. I have lost count of the amount of times I have been asked by people to appraise one. 8. What has been your best buy? Finding a set of the original etched glass panels of Cubist-designed musical instruments by Hector Whistler from the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in France and bringing them back to the city where they belong. 9. What’s your dream object? A bronze panther by Rembrandt Bugatti (even more than my E-Type). 10. Advice for those starting out? Think very long and hard. It’s like fishing, huge long periods of inactivity followed by surges of frenetic activity. But there is no other job that can give you such an emotional charge, so follow your heart.
