I’ve done a lot of “ram- bling” since my last col- umn was written! When I wrote my previous article & update for the Weirs Times, I was facing ma- jor surgery to clear an obstruction in my left ca- rotid artery. My daughter; Malzy’s sister Betty Jane, had moved back to our house in order to make our continued existence possible. Now my first and most major surgery is behind me. Don’t worry; I’m only going to write of each of my experiences once. First on my agenda was

that I had to undergo a nuclear stress test, which was performed at Wolfe- boro’s local hospital by Dr. John Boornazian. Dr. Michael Hearne, a car- diologist at the Catholic Medical Center, had or- dered the test preliminary to my surgery. The test is described below: Nuclear Stress Test –

This is one of the most accurate tests available. It not only provides infor- mation about the heart’s electrical activity, it al- lows physicians to see the heart muscle. In this test, a small amount of a nuclear

I guess that Weirs Times readers should perhaps feel grateful that my recent surgery occurred on my neck! The dressing shown here is now gone, but as of this writing I’ve a few more days to go before the stitches are supposed to rot and fall off. isotope is injected into a vein, usually in the arm, in order to check for areas of the heart that are blocked or damaged. This two-part procedure ob- serves the heart both at rest and during exercise. If you are unable to exercise, an injection of a medication can be given to simulate the effect of exercise on the heart. After the test, a cardiologist will review the results. Dr. Boornazian is a gifted doctor with a fully intact

sense of humor. I told him of the “Saga of my medication list” and

he immediately saw the same humor that I had found in the “saga.” (I’ll

share that saga with you after we move past the cardiac stress test.) When a patient who, like myself, can’t physically endure a treadmill, they have a chemical injected that causes the same stresses on the heart as does vig- orous exercise. As do many patients, I found the effects of the heart- stressing chemical to be unpleasant. I had no terrible reaction, but I’ll be content if I never re- peat a nuclear stress test. The test’s results were forwarded to Dr. Hearne at the Catholic Medical Center who subsequently cleared me for “take-off.” (Actually, I assumed that he had, but this morn- ing, December 29th

Hearne’s office called from the CMC to indicate that Dr. Hearne had cleared me for surgery! It would now appear that Dr. Furey had felt that there was too much urgency involved to See RAMBLING on 10
