THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 13, 2011 RAMBLING from 10

lobby of the Catholic Med- ical Center in Manchester at 6:30am on Thursday, December 23rd! Can you imagine? Accomplishing that required that I get up at 4am in Wolfeboro, a completely unnatural hour. In view of the fact that Betty Jane, having been in Florida for ten years, had also had no experience driving a front wheel drive vehicle in the slippery conditions we faced on the morning of the 23rd

, I drove our van

to Manchester. Probably it was just as well as my having something to oc- cupy my mind proved helpful. You could say that I was a little tense on the morning of December 23rd. Once at the Catholic Medical Center, I first met with my anesthesiologist who explained that I was going to be under a local anesthesia only, so that my surgeon, Dr. Patricia Furey, could keep a con- versation going with me. In doing this, she would have a constant reassur- ance that my brain was receiving an adequate supply of blood during the surgery to my left carotid artery. Were I to become paranoid or otherwise loopy, a shunt (bypass)

No, this is not a piece of fried chicken! Believe it or not, this colorful object was removed from my left carotid artery during my surgery. I suspect my brain’s blood supply is better with this thing in the medical dumpster instead of in my artery!

would be installed and I’d get a dose of general anesthesia to knock me out. Staying under local anesthesia would create a safer and shorter length of surgery it was explained to me. By 8am I was in surgery

and I remember all 3½ hours of my operation during which Dr. Furey explained her every move. It was all very interesting and I took it all in pretty good stride, I was told. I had a translucent blanket over part of my head and over my eyes. I decided

that as long as I could hear Dr. Furey’s com- ments and see well on my side of the blanket, things were probably going well. My vision, hearing and comprehension always re- mained steady it seemed to me. Following the surgery,

Dr. Furey spent time with Malzy and Betty Jane to reassure them and tell them about how well things had gone. (Later, they all reported to me that she had said that I was a “model patient.”
