IN BRIEF

OLYMPIC POOLS PASS THE WATER TEST

The Olympic Aquatics Centre had it’s first taste of water as 10 million litres was poured in to test the three pools. The two 50-metre concrete pools, as well as the deeper dive pool, had the liquid poured into them as a test before the tiling and sealing process begins.

Expected to be completed by the summer of 2011, the pools in the £300m centre will require 180,000 tiles while water resistant timber from Brazil will be used to clad the inside of the iconic roof. The centre, designed by Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid, will mark the gateway to the Olympic Park with the 3,000 tonne roof designed to stretch and twist according to the weather. The 17,500 seat centre will host swimming, diving and water polo finals during the Games, but will be reduced to 2,500 seats afterwards.

CORONER CALLS FOR NEW CRIMINAL OFFENCE

A New South Wales coroner in Australia has recommended a new criminal offence be created for carers and pool owners in charge of children who drown. An inquest has examined the drownings of eight children in the state between June 2006 and January 2009. Deputy state coroner Paul McMahon found there was no criminal negligence on the part of the carers in each of the deaths. Mr McMahon has recommended a new criminal offence be created not dissimilar to that of negligent driving occasioning death. Mr McMahon also recommended the NSW Government develop a private swimming pools register. The inquest heard current records relating to the number of existing private pools are inaccurate. Mr McMahon also recommended changing the law that permits swimming pools to exist without barrier fencing on properties larger than five acres.

CONTECH UK TO BUILD CANOE PARK FOR 2012 OLYMPICS

Contech UK, the sprayed concrete specialists have been awarded the contract to build the canoe slalom course at Broxbourne, Waltham Abbey for the 2012 Olympic Games. Contech UK specialise in Shotcrete sprayed concrete and are known in the swimming pool industry for their quality sprayed shells to the pool trade. Two new canoe slalom courses are being built for the Olympics: a 300m competition course and a 160m intermediate/training course. A new 10,000sq m lake is also being constructed. This will feed a system of pumps that will provide the 300m course with 15 cubic metres of water per

second. The white water will be created by these pumps and obstacles placed in the course. The Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre is due to be the first brand new London 2012 sporting venue to be completed and open to the public before the Games.

After the games the two courses and the facilities building will remain but the temporary seats will be removed. The Centre will become a venue for canoeing and kayaking for the local community and visitors, and be suitable for beginners to elite athletes. It will be owned, funded and managed by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Chris Benson of Contech UK said: “We have put a lot of work into winning the contract over the past nine months but thankfully it has paid off. This is a very prestigious contract and will put us on the map as one of the UK’s leading sprayed concrete companies.”

THREE DUBLIN POOLS TO CLOSE

Three inner-city swimming pools are scheduled to close this year due to Dublin City Council cuts.

The council says it has to make savings of almost €12m from its culture, recreation and amenity budget, because of cutbacks and the need to fund new services, such as a new leisure centre in the city. The three pools were targeted because they were older and more expensive to operate, in poor condition and suffering falls in user numbers. Last October, councillors were told that closing the three pools from this year would save €800,000. They warned that “if this saving is not achieved by closing the pools it will have to be achieved elsewhere within sports and leisure”. A total of €600,000 was found to keep the pools open for six months while other options were looked at. This money will now last until the end of August, officials told a council meeting. After that, as things stand, they will have to close, because efforts to get local groups to assume responsibility for the pools have come to nothing.
