LIW SETS OUT TO RAISE PROFILE FOR UK’S COMMERCIAL POOLS

The British Swimming Pool Federation is also looking to have closer links with the event. LIW in 2009 bucked the recession trend by attracting 13,102 to the three day show a 2% increase over last year. The event offers a mix of exhibition space and education seminars with the theme for the specialist pool and spa trade of meeting local authority and commercial pool owners and managers.

Twenty specialist suppliers from the pool and spa industry attended the event with Astral again supplying its Skypool which hosted the swimming demonstrations.

A substantial effort is to be made at LIW in 2010 to raise the profile and quality of public swimming pools in the UK.

The Leisure Industry Week event at Birmingham’s NEC which takes place from the 21 – 23 September has a dedicated pool and spa section.

LIW organisers are aware that the pool and spa section although well supported needs a higher profile.

“We feel that there is a lot of criticism aimed at commercial pools throughout the UK. The reality is that there is fresh investment being made, new pools being built and some spectacular swimming opportunities available. We as a

show want to raise the level of debate at a time when swimming is such a popular sport and swimming will have a major profile increase at the 2010 London Olympics,” said a spokesman.

LIW is set to attract a number of specialist pool companies seeking to reach the sort of commercial pool managers and operators which they say don’t attend SPATEX.

“It’s a different market and we will always go there as it delivers something else,” said one exhibitor.

For 2010 Heatsave, Plastica, Topline, Swimex, Swan Analytical, Prominent Fluids, Suntrap Systems and others are already booked in.

Pool covers, pool water quality, pool equipment and pool disabled lifts were the main focus of the exhibitors in the pool and spa section of the show.

Jonny Sullens, Event Director of LIW, said: “It is great to see that LIW still plays such an integral role within the leisure sector and visitors value the show as both a great networking and educational opportunity. The team achieved these record figures by focusing on attracting a wide range and high calibre of speakers to present the show seminars and by welcoming new and varied exhibitors, we created an event which offered exceptional interest and value to leisure professionals.”

PROPERTY DEVELOPERS TO INVEST MORE IN BIGGER, BETTER POOLS

The Middle East Pool and Spa Exhibition is paving the way for international pool and spa industry players to tap into the Arabian Gulf region which continues to be one of the most dynamic pool and spa markets in the world with an estimated value of US$10 billion a year. Middle East Pool and Spa (ME Pool and Spa) 2010 will be held from 26 to 28 September at the Sheikh Saeed Halls of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, in the United Arab Emirates.

During the past 12 months, residential property prices in Dubai have fallen 49% from their peak in the third quarter

of last year, while other projects have either been scaled back, delayed or cancelled, according to the property consultancy Jones Lang LaSalle.

“The market today is moving from an asset-creation phase into an asset-management one, where you don’t need to do so many new buildings. What developers need now is to maximise the value of the existing ones,” says Craig Plumb, the head of research at Jones Lang LaSalle. What this means is that in the UAE, investment is going into upgrading existing properties with bigger, better pools and spas. It is a sector attracting a lot of interest – to the benefit of a

specialist trade which is looking for help internationally to develop a more sophisticated pool industry quickly. Health as a business is big business. UAE’s major

developers need to spread their wings and expand into other sectors if they are to continue to grow.

“Diversification is the key in the property industry,” said a spokesman for the ME Pool Show. “Developers are looking more and more at leisure and service industries around their developments- and this means more pools and better support services and systems for the pools.”
