takes less than three minutes and the cover takes up very little space. Alternatively you can purchase a Walu-Matic motorised crank with a 24 volt battery which, with its quick charger, completely recharges the battery in less than 20 minutes, or the Walu-Move wheeled system which raises the cover from the deck and makes operation easier. Certikin says the market for pool covers driven by safety issues remains strong. They are confident that sales of Coverstar will remain strong in 2010. The Coverstar remains at the forefront

of the safety cover market, with its many unique features, such as 4,000 psi rope, 4 x strong sliders than any other used; colour matched heat sealed webbing and exclusive Ultra Guard III vinyl composite material, which is far superior to the industry standard vinyl’s popular with other manufacturers.

The unofficial industry view is that no pool, whatever shape size or usage levels should be without a safety cover. For the time being the UK waits for the next stage of any further formal tightening of safety rules. spn

CASE STUDY: SAFETY FIRST FOR NEW POOL OWNERS WITH YOUNG SWIMMERS

When the Crowther family of Burnham had a new swimming pool built in the spring, their first concern was to make sure their two young children would be safe from accidents. The choice of an effective, high quality safety pool cover is now an automatic choice for pool owners.

The Crowther’s wanted to teach their children the joys of swimming so installed a pool in the back garden of their beautiful home in Buckinghamshire.

“When it came to choosing a cover, we went on the recommendation of our installer, Blue Water Pools of

Oxford, who, without hesitation, said that a Coverstar should be our first choice seeing as safety was our first priority,” explains Mrs Crowther.

Mrs Crowther said the cover also scores 10 out of 10 for retaining the pool’s heat. “In fact, on really hot days we have to remove the cover to let some of the heat out otherwise the water can become too hot for swimming!”

The Crowthers chose a Flush Track, Recessed Roller Coverstar as the new pool has a Roman End step which has to be completely covered. It prides itself on being simple to operate via a key switch and when not in use, the key can be removed, preventing unauthorised operation and adding to the product’s safety.

“What we like about the Coverstar is that it is so easy to use – being automatic, it takes literally a couple of minutes at the most to uncover the pool,”

adds Mrs Crowther. “We didn’t want a cover that would take ages to put on and off. Let’s face it in this country in the time that it takes to get some covers off a pool, the weather can have changed!”

Bruce Coppuck, Pools and Certichem Manager for Certikin International which distributes the product in the UK, says: “The Coverstar is the best automatic safety cover on the market and if it is peace of mind you are looking for, then you can’t buy better.” Barry Cavey of Blue Water Pools, responsible for the installation said: “We are delighted with the cover and pleased that it has surpassed the Crowther’s expectations – it finishes the pool off beautifully.”

New tough draft swimming pool by-laws were introduced last summer forcing owners to register their pool and then have it officially checked for safety. Owners now have to enclose their pools with a fence or a wall in accordance with the country’s building regulations. The wall or fence must not be less than 1.2 metres in height, and not less than one metre from the waters edge. A gate or door attached to this enclosure must contain a self-closing and self-locking device, together with an exit alarm. Every outdoor swimming pool must be secured with a pool cover or be fitted with a floating pool alarm device at all times when the pool is not in use. For indoor swimming pools, a floor glide system in the swimming pool is required, or a floating alarm system device must be fitted.

France

Four years ago changes to French law meant that all privately owned swimming pools were forced to have a safety device in place that conforms to national AFNOR Standards (Association Française de Normalisation). The law is enforced by a fine of up to €45,000 and inspectors check swimming pools in all regions for the correct installation of alarms and barriers. France still has the world’s highest rate of infant death by drowning in swimming pools and is in the process of reviewing all its already tough regulations for 2012. Already all swimming pools have to comply to having a solid fence that is a

minimum of 1.2 metres high; it must not be possible to climb over or under this fence. It must also have a childproof lockable self-closing gate. Life rings must be easily accessible and visible. The pool must be alarmed. Life resuscitation (mouth to mouth) first aid instructions must be clearly visible. A safety cover is a legal obligation. All swimming pools will have to have the swimming area lit too.
