Brisbane welcomes China Eastern World News

China Eastern Airlines is connecting Brisbane and Shanghai direct for a two-month season.

The direct Airbus A330 flights are set to deliver some 5,000 additional Chinese tourists to southern Queensland, giving accommodation and attraction providers a welcome boost from the state’s fastest growing inbound market.

For China Eastern Airlines, Brisbane represents the best gateway to Queensland with both the Sunshine and Gold Coasts a short drive away. Chinese passengers at Brisbane Airport grew 27.5% in 2015, contributing to an overall increase in international passengers of 4.8%. The summer season of flights come ahead of China Eastern’s commencement of scheduled year-around flights between Shanghai

and Brisbane, which will start later in 2016.

“We warmly welcome China Eastern Airlines to Brisbane and look forward to building a strong alliance that will continue to grow in the future,” said Julieanne Alroe, CEO and managing director, Brisbane Airport Corporation. “I commend the management of China Eastern Airlines for committing important resources to this route and providing essential direct flight connections between Shanghai and Brisbane.”

fastjet expands network with flights to Nairobi and Zanzibar

Low-cost airline fastjet has expanded its network from Dar es Salaam with flights to Nairobi and Zanzibar and from Kilimanjaro to Nairobi.

The daily return flights to Zanzibar are expected to make it easier for more Tanzanian and international visitors, boosting tourism and contributing to the Spice Islands’ economic growth. Connecting Kenya and Tanzania promises even greater growth for two of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.

The impact of fastjet flights into Kenya has already been considerable, demonstrated by the fact that fares with competing airlines flying between the two countries have dropped as much as 40%.

fastjet expects to add flights between Zanzibar and Nairobi, as well as between Dar es Salaam and Mombasa later in 2016. The airline has begun flying from Harare and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to Johannesburg, South Africa.

Airberlin joins Etihad in codeshare flight appeal

German carrier airberlin has joined Etihad Airways to appeal against the decision of the Administrative Court of Braunschweig to revoke approval for 29 codeshare flights.

Stefan Pichler, CEO of airberlin, said: “We are appealing against this decision because it does not serve the best interests of the travelling public. Indeed, the main beneficiary of the decision is Lufthansa.

“airberlin is Lufthansa’s sole competitor in the German domestic market,” he said. “We keep the competition honest, strong and effective as otherwise Lufthansa would have a monopoly, which would be disastrous for German consumers.”

airberlin confirmed that it would honour all booked itineraries and that no passengers would suffer as a result of the dispute.

“We will remain a reliable partner for all of our customers, the travel trade as well as the corporates in Germany, continuing to offer an attractive global network together with our partners and leading-edge products and services,” Pichler said.
