Microchip Curiosity Board for potential IoT Applications

arnell element14 has today launched the Curiosity development board from Microchip . On board programming and debug via MPLAB® X IDE and code generation via Microchip’s MCC will appeal to those new to microcontrollers such as hobbyists, makers and students. The board’s use of pdip components and access to most pins simplifies actual development for all users, in addition, the expansion capabilities offered by incorporating a MikroBUSTM Click board header and pads for an RN4020 Bluetooth Module combine to create potentially powerful IoT solutions. The Curiosity Board, which costs £11.76 also includes various LEDs, an mTouch button, push-button switches, and a potentiometer. Power is supplied via a USB connector on the rear of the board. Curiosity is fully compatible with MPLAB Code Configurator as well as supporting 8/14/20 pin PIC MCUs.

F Mike

McGlade, Channel Manager for Microchip EMEA, says: “With a free IDE and C Compiler, Microchip’s new low cost Curiosity Board is a ‘no-brainer’.”

the TOBY-L2 offers many enhancements in functionality and connectivity over the TOBY-L1 series, http://www.alphamicro.net/franchises/u-blox/toby-l1-series.aspx including dual-stack IPv4/6, embedded TCP/IP, UDP/IP and SSL, and the ability to upgrade the firmware via USB. The ISO 16750 qualification provides for a wide variety of in-vehicle infotainment applications, and the very small form-factor and high-speed data rate makes the TOBY-L2 the perfect choice for remote wireless applications in security monitoring, digital signage and mobile health. Network jamming detection and GPS TOBY AssistNow software integration means that time taken locating and fixing failing equipment in the field can be kept to an absolute minimum. The compact, lightweight design (less than 7g) and rugged operational temperature range (-40ºC to +85ºC), combined with individual production inspection and testing, gives very high-quality performance and reliability in the harshest industrial environments.

Where backwards-

compatibility is required for 3G and 2G networks, the TOBY-L2 follows the same 152-pin LGA form-factor (25 x 36 x 2.6mm) for simple migration from existing u-blox W-CDMA,

Industry’s Smallest Energy-Friendly touch Sensing Microcontroller

S

ilicon Labs, a leading provider of energy-friendly microcontroller (MCU) solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT), today introduced the latest member of its EFM8 8-bit MCU portfolio designed for

ultra-low-power, small-footprint IoT applications with capacitive touch sensing requirements. The new EFM8SB1 Sleepy Bee MCUs, available in a 1.78 mm x 1.66 mm wafer-level chip-scale package (WLCSP), are the industry’s smallest MCUs – one-fourth the size of 8-bit MCUs in conventional QFN packages. These tiny MCUs are ideal for touch-based, battery-powered and space-constrained IoT and industrial applications requiring long battery lifetimes and energy-efficient human interfaces. Target applications include wearables, remote controls, Bluetooth accessories and eReaders, as well as industrial automation, home automation and office equipment. The EFM8SB1 Sleepy Bee MCUs are Silicon Labs’ most energy-friendly 8-bit devices offering industry-leading sleep mode power (50 nA with full memory retention and brown-out detection) and an ultra-fast 2 µs wake-up time. Core speeds scale up to 25 MHz, and flash sizes range from 2 kB to 8 kB. The MCUs also integrate a best-in-class capacitive sense controller offering an ultra-low-power < 1 µA wake-on-touch capability and 12 robust capacitive touch channels, eliminating the need for on/off switches in many space-sensitive products such as wearables.

In addition to providing advanced on-chip capacitive sensing technology, Silicon Labs supports touch-sense interface design with its best-in-class Capacitive Sense Library available within the Simplicity Studio™ development platform, offering all of the features and algorithms required to add capacitive sensing interfaces to IoT products. Simplicity Studio provides firmware designers with production-ready firmware, from scanning buttons to filtering noise. By using the Simplicity Studio Capacitive Sense Profiler to visualize real-time data and the noise levels of cap-sense buttons, developers can easily customize touch and no-touch thresholds and noise filtering settings,
