TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION ADVERTORIAL Rugged High-Speed Data Connectors
he Industrial Internet of Things is an exciting development of the digital revolution that is a hot discussion point in every industry. Nick Harper MD at ODU UK Ltd., examines the rugged high-speed data connector requirements for handling the resultant ‘big-data’.
T
The IIoT extends the transfer of commercial technologies into both the industrial and military domains, increasing the need for USB, Firewire and RJ45 connectivity. Whilst we’re all familiar with the connectors that transfer high-speed data in our everyday lives – these do not offer the ruggedness needed for more
demanding environments. The current response has been to re-package the standard commercial connector inside an over-sized military housing, when what is really needed is a fit-for-purpose series of rugged data connectors.
The Solution
Push-pull data connectors are inherently smaller than the ‘connector-within-a- connector’ approach. They also have another advantage – they do not require the ‘finger-space’ needed by traditional military screw connectors, so the overall space-envelope can often be reduced by about one-third. So, apart from the space-saving, what turns a connector into a first-class, high-speed connection?
Data Rates
Skilled contact arrangement and design can optimize a connection to the point that it is currently possible to transmit CAT 6A quality at up to 10Gb/s.
Shielding
A lot of technology in a compact package, with guaranteed 360˚ EMC shield- ing.
Robustness All connectors, no matter how small, withstand MIL-STD mechanical tests and also have an IP68 rating - tightly sealed and resistant to salt-water spray.
Mating Reliability 5,000 plus mating cycles, with both mechanical and colour coding guarantee- ing reliable and simple handling. The ‘scoop-proof’ design offers additional reliability with contacts not damaged if the shells are misaligned during mat- ing.
With a diameter of 10mm to 18.5mm and up to 40 contacts - a neat solution to an awkward problem.
