STUDENT COMPETITION

Student Challenge 2014. The competition was run by CIOB London and CIOB East of England and was open to all London Universities to to identify the region’s most promising construction managers of the future. The winning team comprised second and fi nal-year building surveying students Albert Ben-Guira, Abby Peters, Patrick Wilson and Nick Beers.

The judging panel included Duncan Bullimore from Hays Recruitment, Daren Moseley from United House, Kevin Trash from Hill International, Michael Rourke from the Notting Hill Housing Association and Panie Panayiotou, who’s project, South Point House in north London, was the basis for the competition.

The challenge was in two stages. London

universities entered a team of up to four students to compete in the fi rst heat at Greenwich University. Teams were given two weeks to prepare a 15-minute presentation on what they would do with an offi ce block to use it to its full potential by

LONDON’S NOVUS EVENT ATTRACTS NEW FACES GOOD ATTENDANCE AT INSPIRATIONAL EVENT

Around 70 of London’s young professionals and students attended an informal evening with London Novus recently to learn more about how membership can help their careers. A number of

students who have recently become Novus student reps in their universities

came along as did a number of non- members who have recently been introduced to the CIOB through their employer signing up as a Training Partnership. There were also members who had travelled to Hong Kong for the Global Student Challenge. The London Novus

committee members and other CIOB ambassadors took turns to talk about their experiences with the CIOB, tell inspirational stories and give details of their study and career paths to date. London Branch manager Sam Briggs gave an overview of the CIOB and of the London Branch and

was on hand to offer membership advice and encourage progression. London Novus chairman, Chulu Kamalondo, was on the lookout for enthusiastic people to join the Novus team and four new names will now become ambassadors for Novus.

Kingston University students have won the CIOB Novus Bright Futures

Kingston students won the Novus Bright Futures Student Challenge.

evaluating each option given and recommending one based on cost, income, timescales, planning/ construction restrictions and effects on the local community and environment. The top three teams were then selected to

compete in the fi nals. They were University of Westminster, Kingston University and the University of West London. In addition, an outstanding individual prize was awarded to

University of Westminster student Natalja Udalcova. The fi nal stage was held at the site, in Southgate. Teams were given a brief and a tape measure with two hours to look around the site and prepare their fi nal presentations. The winners were presented with a trophy, gift

vouchers from Hays recruitment, work experience with United House and tickets to a Hill Masterclass.
