Carbon champion and CIOB ambassador among big name winners of sustainability leader award

The 2014 Sustainability Leaders Awards celebrate sustainability champions in a variety of fields. >

Dave Hampton FCIOB, carbon coach and a CIOB ambassador,

was named Sustainability Leader (Person) at November’s edie Awards.

The 2014 Sustainability Leaders Awards — run by sustainability information source edie and now in their eighth year — celebrate the best in sustainable business. Other winners on the night included B&Q, Sainsbury’s, AkzoNobel and Cap Gemini. Hampton collected his award at a

glittering ceremony, hosted by TV impressionist and environmentalist Alistair McGowan, at London’s Connaught rooms. Winners were chosen from 74 shortlisted finalists in 14 categories ranging from Carbon Management to Stakeholder Engagement and Sustainability Reporting. The panel of judges included the Carbon

Trust’s chief operating officer Michael Rea, BRE’s chief executive Peter Bonfield and Forum for the Future’s chief executive Sally Uren. They said that Hampton “leads

the way in explaining and educating how individuals, companies and communities can live a lower carbon lifestyle – and demonstrates how this can be done by his committed personal lifestyle”. Another judge added that Hampton was inspirational by “challenging norms, supporting change and influencing both corporate clients and the general public”. Hampton has been involved with the CIOB on a number of initiatives, including Carbon Action 2050.

INSPIRING THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION IN ESSEX EDUCATION

SITE VISIT OFFERS SCHOOL PUPILS A TASTE OF REAL-LIFE CONSTRUCTION

As a follow up to the Essex Schools event held in September, students in the East of England were taken on a site visit before Christmas as a way of promoting construction as a career choice. The year 13 students are

currently deciding which career path to take and the visit to Countryside Properties’ site at Harold Wood in north-east London helped explain the

different roles and career options available in the industry. The students were given a

brief introduction by Beri Feric MCIOB, senior project manager, and an overview of the Harold Wood site using a scale model, then invited to look around the show home. The students then viewed the

units which had been handed over and had the opportunity

to meet with Countryside staff in a variety of roles from project manager to a graduate trainee. Feric explained the process

of construction from buying the land to handing over the homes and everything in between. The students also saw how

all aspects of construction are handled from the site office and were able to see the site overall from a viewing balcony.
