International achievement awards aim to discover ‘hidden heroes’

The CIOB’s fi rst International Outstanding Achievement Awards

has recognised Alex Cook from Barratt Developments as the Outstanding Newcomer of the Year, along with Qi Hu from China Minsheng Jiaye Investment.

The awards set out to discover the hidden heroes within project teams who have made an outstanding contribution and

changed things for the better. It encompasses fi elds as diverse as procurement, conservation, design, people management, facilities and health and safety management. After only eight weeks at Barratt

Developments, Alex Cook (pictured above) identifi ed an opportunity to improve the process for contracting affordable housing. He took ownership for negotiating contracts for 29 homes and his bosses, impressed with his work, asked him to take on a further 19 homes. Cook was selected alongside senior managers to join a strategic working group. No other Barratt graduate, after two years in the business, has had the ability to play a key role in such a strategic project. His contribution led management to create a

CONSTRUCTION MANAGER OF THE YEAR EXPERT JUDGES NEEDED FOR 2015 CMYA AWARDS Be a judge for the prestigious CMYA awards

The CIOB is on the hunt for judges for the Construction Manager of the Year Awards (CMYA). The Awards promote the achievements of individual site-based managers with overall responsibility for fi nal delivery of a construction project. They are one of the industry’s most coveted accolades.

Judges must be

corporate members of the CIOB and possess extensive knowledge and experience in construction management (in site project management or other key areas). Please note that to be a

CMYA judge, you will need to be available for three consecutive days between

are encouraged to apply and applications from practitioners in all areas of construction management are welcomed.

Achievement award for orchestrating the design of three hotels simultaneously in China. From setting up a design team to negotiating with hotel management and fi nalising suitable facilities that were more respectful to the local community and culture, Qi Hu strove to understand every aspect of his clients’ business. With two of the hotels situated in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region, and the third based in Xi An, an ancient city of the Tang Dynasty, these hotels had to be designed sympathetically to their cultural

surroundings and yet still offer the modernity the client was looking for. All three projects were successfully

developed.
