together an itinerary. Once you’re on the ground, he is a very sophisticated second set of eyes. He’s knowledge- able about course design and good at interpreting what he’s seeing. And with Kevin you never get bored. He knows a lot about a lot of things, so the conversa- tion is always interesting. He doesn’t have a back- ground in journalism but he’s a naturally curious per- son, so we could be talking to the head pro somewhere and he would ask a question that made me think about things in a different way.” As the chief investment
officer at Interlake Capital Management, Kevin, 41, has a flexible schedule that
accommodates his wander- lust. His only vice is buying golf gear. He thinks nothing of jetting to Scottsdale to do an all-day custom-fitting at Cool Clubs and then dropping $3,000 on clubs so lovely he refers to them as “jewelry.” A month later, after having been ensnared in the message boards at
golfWRX.com, he’s likely to have a new driver, or new putter, or both. If you see a guy at Bayonet dining with his golf clubs, it’s probably Kevin. His single-minded- ness helps account for how he has become the kind of golfer who can shoot 68 at Bandon Trails, which he did last summer. (Matt was there to see it and I wasn’t,
of course.) Kevin was always the fifth man on Salinas High’s golf team, but in his 30s he developed an inter- est—some might say obses- sion—with the golf swing. He can recite passages of Ralph Mann’s “Swing Like A Pro” as if it were scripture, and it’s not unusual to call him late at night and discov- er he’s watching YouTube videos of some long-dead golfer’s action. From all of this you
would be correct in surmis- ing that Kevin is a bachelor. For years, there’s been cluck- ing among his friends that he would have to sacrifice
his love of golf for the sake of nurturing a romance. So in our social circle it was big news recently when Kevin fell into a serious relationship. Fi- nally, we thought, we’d have a chance of beating this guy during what was sure to now be his infrequent rounds of golf. Well, it turns out K.P.’s new gal works for the Pebble Beach Co. and is an enthu- siastic golfer herself. One of their first dates was a round at Spyglass Hill, followed swiftly by games at Pebble, Spanish Bay and Old Del Monte. For free, of course. Some guys have all the
luck.
