CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR’S TOP S.T.A.R.S. PERFORMERS! Gilliane

by MELISSA VRINER AND PETER ZAPALO U.S. Figure Skating would like to honor the top finish-

ers in the 2014 S.T.A.R.S. season. We will feature some of these inspiring athletes in upcoming issues of SKATING and at various 2015 S.T.A.R.S. events. Don’t forget: S.T.A.R.S. is about personal achievement.

It’s great to aspire to compete with your peers, but it is even more important to track your progress relative to yourself as you develop as an athlete.

Cain “I love how I have been able to track my improvement over the past four years and how its helped me monitor my training both on and off-ice ice to improve both athletically and in my on-ice performance.”

Dixon STARS FSC OF TEXAS, NOVICE LADIES

“I have been a student at the

Houston Academy of Dance for about six years, in ballet, modern, hip-hop, jazz, tap and contem- porary, and participate in their Summer Immersion programs. I also run and work out at the gym when I’m home. I would like to continue moving up through the levels of singles skating and also compete in ice dance. Eventually, I would love to compete in the CrossFit Games, and perhaps per- form in Disney on Ice or a professional dance company for a season.”

ST. PAUL FSC, ADULT SINGLES AND ADULT MASTERS INTERMEDIATE/ NOVICE

“S.T.A.R.S. has helped guide

my off-ice conditioning, which has in turn helped me transform my skating. My jumps are bigger and more consistent, my spin positions are stronger and my overall power, flow and perfor- mance have improved signifi- cantly since I started focusing on my off-ice conditioning. I want a clean double-double combination so I can pass novice free skate, and eventually be the first adult skater in my club to pass the senior free skate test.”

my speed, balance, flexibility and strength. I am working on getting all my jumps clean and then hope to go to nationals. Off ice I want to gain strength and balance throughout my whole body. I am learning three foreign languages, like to draw and paint and I like to play Mi- necraft with my friends.”

Top Adult Male

Ted Gradman SC OF SAN FRANCISCO, ADULT INTERMEDIATE

“I’ve been doing the hot (105 degrees) Bikram

yoga for about 15 years, and I am now doing Bikram, Vinyasa and Iyengar — at least two of these per week. I also work out at the Fitness SF gym, mostly with a rowing machine, sometimes bike or elliptical machine. On Saturday mornings, I go from 32 degrees to 105 degrees and then sometimes to the gym. Kind of hard to fit in training when you’re a psychologist with a full-time-plus practice.”
