MCLORAINE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS NAMED

The Helen M. McLoraine Figure Skating College Scholarship

program was established through the Pioneer Fund in December 2009 to assist current or former U.S. Figure Skating-eligible skaters who dedicated their lives to skating and now wish to pursue a full- time college education. The Pioneer Fund serves as the private charitable foundation

of the late Helen McLoraine as a way to support projects and orga- nizations she had contributed to throughout her life. Deeply infl uenced by her mother’s dedication to philanthropy, Helen became a generous benefactor to others with a passion for fi gure skating, higher education and medical research. U.S. Figure Skating is pleased to announce the fi fth class of scholarship recipients. The scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America. Scholarships totaling $240,000 were awarded to 40 fi nalists representing 28 diff erent fi gure skating clubs in increments of

$4,000, $6,000 and $8,000. This year, 85 applications were received from college-bound skaters (former or current) representing 29 states. Applications were evaluated based on a combination of academic performance and other applicant information including participation and leadership in school and community activities, statement of goals and aspirations and an essay. Final awards are also based on fi nancial-need consideration. This college scholarship program will continue to award

$240,000 in future years, and between 35 and 45 scholarships will be awarded annually. The program is open to skaters in ladies, men, pairs, or ice dance who have competed in the novice level or above in a U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned competition and who enroll in full-time undergraduate study. The two-month application period for 2015 scholarships will open in mid-December. For more information and an application, visit http://sms.scholarshipamerica.org/pioneerfund after Dec. 15.
