Sept. 24-28 • Catalina Film Festival, Catalina. This annual competitive festi- val includes awards in up to 10 cate- gories, including the Isla Earth Award, recognizing an outstanding environ- mental documentary, presented by the Catalina Island Conservancy.


Sept. 26 • Queen Mary’s 80th anniversary Celebration, Long Beach. The ocean liner turns 80 and the public is invited to join a ship-wide celebration. The Queen Mary will open her gangways and ballrooms, decks and salons, attractions and eateries to a daylong celebration highlighted by a very special event. There will be no charge for admission to the ship from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., discounted parking and discounted ship tours and attractions. Commemorations will include the reading of letters by King George V at the ship’s launch on Sept. 26, 1934, and a recent congratulatory message from Queen Elizabeth II on the ship’s 80th anniversary. The Queen Mary will use the anniversary event to announce a groundbreaking initiative, a forward-looking plan inspired by the ship’s eight-decades of public life and overall influence on maritime com- merce. Oct. 10 • Catalina Island Cruiser’s Weekend, Catalina. Charter your favorite boat and head to the Isthmus for this year’s Catalina Island Cruisers’ Weekend. On this popular Two Harbors’ weekend, be sure to arrive in time for an evening at the Harbor Reef Bar. Saturday, Oct. 11 includes exhibitor booths and cruising semi-


nars. The motive is to get veteran cruisers with their novice counterparts to discuss the latest information on destinations, tactics, tips and gear. The affair is the kickoff for the south bound migration to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Saturday evening enjoy a beach barbecue and live music. Tri-tip is provided by the Port Royal Yacht Club, drinks by Adventure Voyaging and sides and desserts by you, the cruisers. All events are free. Oct. 26 • The Wild Side Art Show and Sale, Newport Beach. A passion for Catalina Island and plein air art come together to create an extraordinary afternoon. Oct. 11 • The Island to Island Waterman Relay, Catalina. Catalina Island Cruisers’ Weekend is partnering with The Island to Island Waterman Relay this year. This 28-mile relay takes the racers from Santa Barbara Island to the Isthmus. It is one of California’s premier paddle events, featuring an international field of the world’s top paddlers and should not be missed. Nov. 8 • Catalina Island Eco- Marathon & Half Marathon, Catalina. Runner’s World rates the Catalina Eco- Marathon as the “Best Island Run” because it travels through an other- worldly place where, the magazine notes, “you can see buffalo, bald eagles, seals and palm trees during a single run. The Eco-Marathon course travels through three distinct ecosys- tems via trails and soft dirt roads. Runners traverse single-track trails, ridgelines, and vistas that afford views of the Pacific Ocean from both sides of the Island.


Nov. 27 • 37th Dana Point Turkey Trot, Dana Point. With more than 17,000 participants, the Dana Point Turkey Trot is the sixth-largest turkey trot in the nation. Produced by the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Run Racing, the Dana Point Turkey Trot features 5K and 10K runs, a “Kids’ Gobble Wobble,” and a two-day health and fitness expo. Haunted Birch Aquarium offers Halloween Fun


LA JOLLA — Families looking for a spooky Halloween activ- ity — but with an educational twist — will enjoy the 14th annual Haunted Birch Aquarium Shipwrecked event scheduled for Oct. 24 and 25. With the setting of a


spooky shipwreck, numerous fun and educational marine life-oriented activities, and live music from the zydeco band Billy Lee & the Swamp Critters to help attendees get up and “Boo-gie,” the annual event promises a good time for the whole family. The Halloween-themed


event is open to all ages and is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. at Birch Aquarium, at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. Activities include the chance to make “slime” in a deep-sea slime lab, touch a vari- ety of mysterious live sea crea- tures, discover marine animals that glow in the dark, join in a costume contest to win a raffle prize and collect “tricky treats.” Admission is $17 at the door. Advance tickets are $15 for the


public, $12 for aquarium mem- bers and free for children 2 and younger. (The October Kids Free in San Diego offer applies only to aquarium general admission and does not apply at this spe- cial event.) All children younger than 16 must be accompanied by a paid adult.
