Liverpool Golf Club for organising an excellent Open Championship last month at Hoylake. And, of course, a big well done to the eventual winner Rory McIIroy, who went into the last round with a six shot lead that proved just enough to hold off the challenges of Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia, who tied for second place two shots behind McIIroy. Just seconds after holing his

championship winning putt on the 18th green, we had the usual sight on our television screens of the ball being thrown into the crowd by the elated winner – in this case by young Rory. However, the story of that ball does not end with it leaving the course in the pocket of the person fortunate enough to have caught it. Within minutes, Green Jacket

Auctions posted on Twitter that they would pay up to $10,000 for the ball, and as they later said on their website ‘we quickly learned about the gentleman who caught the ball, Lee Horner of Leeds, England, and began negotiations to obtain it for our auction’. What they finally paid Mr Horner is

unknown, but bidding began on the Green Jackets Auction website on 23 July at $1,000 and currently stands at $5,558 (as at 29 July). It will be interesting to see what the total has climbed to when the auction closes on 9 August. I suspect the ball, a custom made Nike RZN Black ‘RORS’, which has been authenticated by Nike, will eventually go for several times the

amount paid by Green Jackets. This reminds me of when I played at

Barnehurst Golf Club in Kent several decades ago when I lost my ball on the third hole – not an unusual experience for me. The ball was quite distinctive having been given to me by a friend who had just returned from a golfing holiday in the USA, and I was sorry to lose it. However, I returned to the course a

few weeks later, and whilst we were waiting to tee off, my friends and I were approached by a small group of children offering balls for sale. And, you guessed it, one of the balls they were selling was the one I had lost! The Ryder Cup is now a matter of

weeks away and European players who could well miss out include Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez, whilst Americans yet to gain sufficient points for automatic qualification include Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker and Tiger Woods. There is some important golf to be

played over the next couple of weeks and I suspect both captains, Paul McGinley and Tom Watson, will be left with some interesting wild card deliberations before both teams are finalised. Would you want to tell Tiger Woods that he hasn’t made the team?
