Transition Praise
For almost the full 20 years since retiring from the Air Force, I have read with consistent disappointment the many publications regarding career-transition advice offered by a variety of well-intentioned authors and publicists. Your May issue included a series of career-oriented articles [MOAA Transition Guide, “Best Foot Forward”] that, in my professional opinion, provided time-honored, if not a bit contrarian, guidance for someone making their first leap over the fence or a transition between post-military jobs. I can only hope that your readers perceived the wisdom in your perspective and the techniques you offered folks who typically have not made too many planned career moves that demand a surprising degree of nonstandard judgment and adaptation.
I tried to identify some element of misdirection in your articles, but found only sound advice that should be heeded. Although a real challenge, the perfect acid test would be to evaluate a group of 100 retiring O6s to determine their level of acceptance of your admonishments. In my last 20 years directing a human resource consulting group, including many recruiters and outplacement/ career coaches, our toughest client type was that one group, for reasons that mystified everyone.
