Santé’s organic and health food manufacturing facility,
biscuits roll off the production lines in stacks of four or five units and are then
wrapped and inserted into cardboard packaging at high speed. It is essential, however, that broken biscuits are detected, so the company turned to Keyence for a solution that would allow a window of
just 150ms for inspecting each stack. With Keyence’s CV-5000 vision system, edge
detection/position is performed by two cameras placed about 20cm above the biscuits on each line. A different program has to be set for each of the thirty-odd shapes and sizes conveyed on each line. Alongside edge detection/position, there 19 other inspection
tools available with Keyence’s CV-5000 vision systems. Each of the inspection tools makes it possible to set up a detection application simply and quickly. The system allows one million pixels to be processed in
20.5ms, which means it is possible to perform multiple inspections reliably, the company explains. The CV-5000 Series are controlled by a high-speed colour
image processing engine and RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) CPU. Both are supplemented by two DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) designed specifically for image processing. All models use these four processors to achieve parallel processing and attain fast processing speed. The system is also equipped with a double-buffer memory that allows it to accept the next trigger input while an image is being processed. Commenting on the benefits, Fabien Ployon, production
manger, said: “Because the CV-5000 vision system works faster than our lines, it gives us definite leeway. It runs seven days a week and we’re very satisfied with its detection reliability and stability.”

New from FLIR is the A310 ex, an ATEX compliant solution where the thermal imaging camera (a FLIR A310) is mounted in an enclosure. This means assets can be monitored in explosive atmospheres, with applications including process monitoring, quality control and fire detection. The solution can be installed in classification
zones one, two, 21 and 22, with the certification comprising the whole system including the enclosure and components inside – such as the thermal imaging camera, heater and integrated controller. The flame-proof enclosure ‘d’ prevents any explosion transmission from the inside of the enclosure to the outside. This is also IP67 rated and comes with a heater which effectively prevents fogging and freezing of the protection window. The integrated

New to DJB Instruments UK’s range of accelerometers and instrumentation is the VB/01, a low cost battery powered single channel IEPE accelerometer supply which provides 4mA constant current supply at 18VDC. This features LED indicators for power, short circuit and open circuit and is, the company explains, ideal for field testing where no mains power is available. Also new is the 8401 IEPE sensor
simulator. This installs in place of an IEPE accelerometer (or other sensor) and accepts signals from a voltage function generator, allowing the user to verify signal conditioning settings and cable integrity. The 8401 uses the power from the IEPE signal conditioning to complete the checks.
