New line of compact
temperature sensors
ith OPTITEMP TRA-C10, TRA-C20 and TRA-C30, KROHNE introduces its new line of compact temperature sensors.
W They follow the
current trend in many industries, where for standard applications,
traditional temperature sensors are
replaced with compact ones, especially in OEM applications. Unlike traditional sensors that have to be configured by choosing from various combinations of measuring insert, thermowell and transmitter, the compact sensors are pre-configured with an integrated transmitter to meet the most common requirements in terms of measuring range, immersion length as well as process and electrical connections. Their main advantage is their size: as in many process and OEM applications there is only limited space for sensors, so their small housing design is a desirable feature. Although they aim at different fields of application, OPTITEMP TRA-C10, TRA-C20 and TRA-C30 share the same basic design: equipped with Pt100 class A sensor element and built-in analogue transmitter, they cover the temperature
range from -50…+150°C/58…302°F
(without integrated transmitter +200°C/392°F) for liquid and gaseous mediums. Accuracy is ±0.15% of measuring range.

New VLPSC linear position sensors with digital signal conditioned voltage or current output
ariohm EuroSensor’s new VLPSC linear position sensor adds integrated signal conditioning electronics with an autosensing 0 -10 VDC or 4..20 mA proportional digital output in a tried and tested design based on its flagship VLP series potentiometric output sensors. The digital signal conditioner offers a 12-bit resolution with linearity to 0.1% and excellent repeatability in a choice of nine standard measurement ranges from 25 to 290 mm. Combining the durability of Variohm’s VLP series linear potentiometer position sensor and the convenience of a digital output device, the new VLPSC has self-aligning spherical bearing mounts in a 15 mm square housing design. The new sensor includes the improved O-ring and felt shaft sealing arrangement recently introduced on the VLP series and provides IP65 ingress protection in a compact design that keeps the overall sensor length shorter than competitive devices from other manufacturers. The signal conditioner adaptation also provides a teach function for the start and end datum position references of the sensor which is easily carried out via a simple stand-alone procedure using a separate input rather than more complex computer programming. The VLP measurement technology used in the new sensor features a conductive plastic resistance element that is built up by the application of several layers of specialised printed inks. This combines with a patented elastomer damped multi-fingered precious metal wiper arrangement that ensures smooth and uninterrupted contact with low electrical noise, even under the most demanding physical and environmental conditions. The VLP series is widely used in arduous application areas such as motorsports as well as agricultural machinery and construction equipment where it enjoys an excellent quality and reliability profile. The typical life of the VLP wiper mechanism is over 25 million operations. The VLPSC has an operating temperature rating of -40 to +90 ºC, a supply voltage rating of 24 VDC +/- 20%, and is supplied with 3m leads. Custom versions with alternative stroke lengths, specialised mountings and connectors can be supplied on request.

New high-frequency Pressure Transient logger
water network for damaging pressure transients and combatting ‘water hammer’. With a five-year battery life, fast data sampling and large memory, HWM’s Pressure Transient logger is suitable for both long-term surveys and rapid trouble shooting deployments. The new logger features an expanded 4GB of flash memory and uses advanced data compression algorithms to store up to eight billion readings on board. It can operate in the field for weeks or even months while still sampling rapidly enough (25Hz) to effectively monitor for pressure transients. Conventional data loggers are unable to sample at a fast enough rate or store enough data to log and catch damaging pressure spikes, which may only last a fraction of a second. Despite - and in part because of - the speed and brevity of the event, these moments of extreme pressure differential are a major factor in reducing asset lifetime and causing burst water mains. Sources can be traced, but only after they have been identified, analysed and compared against other known network events, such as pump or valve activation, or high consumer activity.

pirax Sarco has launched a range of pressure-reducing microturbines that generate electricity to reduce utility costs for
S steam system operators.
Suitable for saturated or superheated steam, Spirax Sarco TR
Steam MicroTurbines are
available in two sizes, up to 700 kW. Higher electricity outputs are available on request. A microturbine producing 300 kW of electrical power can generate cost savings of more than £150,000 per year. The greater the steam demand, the more electricity the turbine will generate and the faster the payback. Generally, higher pressure steam distributed from a boiler is conventionally lowered by a pressure reducing station, to match the needs of the heating or
process application. With a Spirax Sarco TR
Steam MicroTurbine, the steam is reduced to the required pressure as it travels through the turbine, with the energy released by the pressure drop being used to generate electricity.
