Now available from George Fischer are the Type 2270 Ultrasonic Blind Sensor and Type 2260 Ultrasonic Display Sensor, solutions for continuously monitoring liquid volumes and flow rates. The sensors operate on the


‘time of flight’ principle where a sound wave is transmitted from a point above the fluid surface and


the time for the return signal to be received is measured. This provides a reading of the level for the surface to an accuracy of ±0.2% of flow, while allowing for wave height or the presence of dust and grease contamination. The sensors can recognise and allow for ‘disturbing objects’ such as mixing paddles or ladders on the side of tanks, and can cope with light foaming of the liquid. The user can also pre-program in different tank or channel shapes to facilitate the calculation of volumes. Additional features include a


large, easy to read display, and a 4-20mA signal strength to communicate with central monitoring devices, HART modem or process control systems. The 2270 offers operating ranges of 4-6m, while the 2260

Fluke Networks has introduced cloud services for its new handheld OneTouch AT Network Assistant or as a software upgrade for existing units. This enables the tester to provide visibility into network performance over time and offers ‘launch-and-leave’ remote testing and more in-depth analytics. The OneTouch AT tester and cloud


service make it easier to see network irregularities, with sequential test results uploaded to the cloud and plotted on colour-coded charts. Technicians can view trended results from multiple tests side by side, zoom in to see details, and then print or download charts as documentation.

DATA CABLE TRANSMISSION TESTER LAUNCHED


SignalTEK CT from Ideal Networks is a tester for those who need to prove that copper cabling has been installed correctly and can support Gigabit Ethernet applications to IEEE802.3ab. This carries out two primary tests via


its Autotest function. The wiremap test displays crossed pairs, opens, shorts and split pairs; while the data transmission test performs at 100Mbit/s or 1000Mbit/s, providing 100% load on that link from both sides. This provides a clear reading if the link can support the desired Ethernet speed. The tests perform to the IEEE802.3ab


standard by measuring if all the frames arrive at the other end of the cable by having two handsets, allowing for one person testing. In addition, Pass/Fail results are displayed on the screen and can be saved to a USB memory stick. According to the company, the data

Enter 670 MEASURING PIPES FOR OIL AND GAS PROJECTS


Between Barrow Island and the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields, three pipelines were being laid in 200m of water at the top of the escarpment down to a water depth of 730m. However, with the 30in diameter pipes being fatigue-sensitive, welding these to precise engineering tolerances was critical. To help, OMS conducted a pipe measurement and fit-up survey to ascertain which pipes would be suitable and in which sequence they should be welded to minimise project HiLo. Two OMS operators used the PipeChecker laser-based measurement tool to measure the geometry of


the internal walls of more than 400 pipe ends, resulting in around 70 pipes being selected as the most suitable for the Jansz Scarp Crossing pipeline. The measurement data was then made available to OMS’ SmartFit software, which calculated the best possible fit-up sequence for the pipes. For this project, the HiLo requirement was less than or equal to 0.5mm. The weld seam had to be within


±45˚ of TDC. In addition, the longitudinal weld seams had to be offset to at least 100mm. This data was configured into SmartFit; and the software analysed the fit-up of the pipes and allowed the operators to mark the best rotational position on each pipe end. In the bead stall, these marks were then aligned to immediately achieve the best rotational position so that misalignment was minimised and the project HiLo was achieved. Any problem pipes that didn’t fit at the specified HiLo were also indicated and re-sequenced or removed. Production delays due to mismatched pipes were therefore avoided.
