year and the latest idea coming out of the USA had me checking my calendar to make sure that April Fool’s Day hadn’t been moved to 1 May for 2014! It seems that 100 golf courses
across America are in the process of changing the size of the holes from 4 and a half inches to 15 inches – roughly the size of an alloy wheel on a small car. The rationale behind this daft idea
is that golf is losing popularity in the States because it is perceived as being too hard. Now, I am all for encouraging people to take up the game and applaud the National Golf Month initiative taking place this month in the UK where the focus is to reverse the steady decline in numbers participating over the last few years. However, a dumbing down of the
game is not the answer. If the size of the pockets on a snooker table were made three times wider than they are, maximum 147 breaks would be an everyday occurrence in the snooker halls up and down the country.
So sorry Guys, a good try but I’m
afraid it is back to the drawing board. Mind you, perhaps FIFA could
change the width of the goals in football from 8 to 20 yards – even England couldn’t lose a penalty shoot-out with goals 60 feet wide! Having said that, I wouldn’t bet my house on it. I see that American tycoon Donald

Trump has become the new owner of Turnberry, the Scottish golf resort which has hosted the British Open on four occasions – the last time as recent as 2009 when Stewart Cink defeated the great Tom Watson in an all American play-off. Rumour has it that Trump has paid
considerably less for Turnberry than the previous owners and has vowed to make no major changes without the approval of the R&A. Commenting on the ownership, he stated: “I'm not going to touch a thing unless the Royal & Ancient ask for it or approve it. I have the greatest respect for the R&A and I won't do anything to the golf course at all without their full stamp of approval." However, a name change to ‘The
Trump Turnberry’ has already been mooted as a distinct possibility even though it sounds like a children’s card game! We will watch developments with
interest. Finally, congratulations to Sweden’s
Jonas Blixt on finishing in tied second place in last month’s Augusta Masters. This follows his 4th place in last year’s US PGA Championship and puts him in a good position to make Paul McGinley’s Ryder Cup team later this year. Certainly a name to look out for over the coming months.
Happy Hacking!
