GAMES TO WATCH
BOYS: NEW YORK CHAMPIONSHIPS June 7 (Hempstead, N.Y.) Smithtown West could be the favorite to capture the Long Island Class A title. Class B might be the most competitive class in the state. Garden City aims to repeat in 2014, but Yorktown, Rocky Point, Jamesville- DeWitt and Eastport South Manor are among legitimate contenders. Cazenovia Central started the year 10-0 and is the defending Class C champion.
GIRLS: PENNSYLVANIA CHAMPIONSHIPS June 7 (Hershey, Pa.) Defending champ Harriton started the year 3-4, but
rolled off six straight wins to return to the National Top 25 conversation. The Rams returned all but two starters from 2013. Garnet Valley returned nine starters and was unbeaten in-state through April 26. Springfi eld-Delco’s lone in-state loss was to Garnet Valley. Manheim Township has been a consistent threat. Archbishop Carroll started 10-2.
UNDER THE RADAR SOUTH COUNTY RISING South County’s rise in the Virginia boys’ lacrosse ranks
the last three years reached a milestone April 22, when the Stallions defeated defending state champion Chantilly and at 10-0 were the last undefeated team in Class 6A. Army-bound David Symmes (27 goals, 20 assists at press
time), Austin Fitzmaurice (25 goals) and Kevin Quigley (25 goals) hoped to lead South County to a deep playoff run after getting bounced by Langley the last two years. Goalie Mike Wentzel (74 saves) had two shutouts in April. “He’s been playing on fi re,” coach Dale Nalls said. Before 2012, South County had a string of sub-.500 seasons, including a 2-10 fi nish in 2010. The Stallions went 4-8 in 2011, 13-3 in 2012 and 12-4 in 2013. “I love coaching these guys. They’re hard working, light and creative. They’re a lot of fun to coach,” Nalls said. “This is a special group.”

NIKE/US LACROSSE HONOR ROLL KENDRA LANUZA Chatfi eld (Colo.)
Lanuza (Denver) piled up 121 points through 14 games, including three nine- goal games and a 15-point surge April 5 in a win over Chaparral (Colo.). Chatfi eld started the year 14-0 and is one of the top teams in the West.
MIKE D’AMARIO
Niskayuna (N.Y.) The Virginia-bound attackman led the Silver Warriors with 37 goals and 15 assists through April, including a six-goal outburst in a 17-7 win over Shenendehowa. Niskayuna was ranked in the National Top 25 and Northeast Top 10 at press time.
LINDSEY RONBECK
Manhasset (N.Y.) Ronbeck (Florida) scored
seven goals in a 14-12 win over Good Counsel (Md.) on April 12 and followed that up with six-goal games against Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) on April 22 and Darien (Conn.) on April 26. The only blemish in Manhasset’s 8-1 start was a 6-5 loss to Notre Dame Prep (Md.).
CADE VAN RAAPHORST
Desert Vista (Ariz.) The Duke-bound
defenseman is a big reason the Thunder started 16-0. The defense never allowed double-digit goals and posted two shutouts. Van
Raaphorst had 63
ground balls, 28 caused turnovers, eight goals and three assists
through April.
