ON A Publication of US Lacrosse

By Corey McLaughlin WILLS’ ÕPRO DAY

Nervous? “Totally,” Devon Wills says. Wills is about to see her first shots in goal with Major League Lacrosse’s New York Lizards during training camp. She has a cold, carrying Sudafed in her equipment bag, and jet lag due to a red-eye flight from California. The USC women’s lacrosse team, for which Wills is an assistant coach, played last night. Sometime early this morning, Wills crossed into the Eastern Time zone for a one-day tryout as the first female attempting to make an MLL roster. This day has been highlighted on her calendar for some time, although not necessarily because she wanted to break some perceived gender barrier. “To me, it’s about making a team,” Wills says. Wills, who played at Dartmouth from 2003 to 2006 and has been with the U.S. women’s national team since 2007, is in uncharted territory. Only one other woman has played lacrosse at any pro level. Ginny Capicchioni, a former Sacred Heart goalie, did it in 2003 when she appeared in the final game of the regular season for the New Jersey Storm of the indoor National Lacrosse League. Lacrosse Magazine followed Wills in her pursuit of history.
