How Aussie sensation Marlee Paton capitalizes on 8-meter shots

>> WHAT I DO

PLAY FOR A

LACROSSE GOD

I didn’t know what the culture was here coming from Australia, but I heard nothing but positive words about Loyola. I also played with Jen Adams in the 2009 World Cup, and she just solidified it, telling me that I would love it. I was a little nervous, because she was teammate before she was my coach. But since I was little, I’ve had the utmost respect for her. She’s a lacrosse god. Everyone has complete trust with what she does because she’s so innovative and creative all over the field. It’s a privilege to play for her.

SUPPORT NEWPORT

My mum, my aunty, my cousins and my sister have all played and came through my club (Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club). If it wasn’t for that club, I probably wouldn’t be here today. It’s just a cool tradition with [Loyola] alumni being a part of that club. It allowed me to grow. When I was 15, I was playing with 30- and 20-year-olds. It’s a laid back kind of culture, but it definitely creates good lacrosse players.

GIVE ME WINGS

I always drink a RedBull before every game. It’s probably not the best thing for you, but I’ve been doing it since freshman year. I always try to hydrate a lot before the game, so I drink a lot of water. But RedBull is my little kick.

MY CHARM CITY CHEER

Since I live right by the beach back home, I’m used to being by the water, so seeing [Baltimore’s] Inner Harbor here is just so pretty. The weather is exactly the same as Melbourne. It’s like four seasons in a day. I love going to downtown to walk

around and go shopping. I love H&M. One just opened in Australia — the first H&M. We didn’t have it, so when I came here, I fell in love with it.

MY INDOCTRINATION

I was 5 years old when I first picked up a lacrosse stick. My dad took me out in the street and I picked it up left-handed and he said, ‘Oh my god!’ It was a pink fiddle stick and ever since then, I’ve stuck with it. My dad also used to play just for fun for Williamstown Lacrosse Club.

>> MY CAREER GOALS

I’m a communications major and marketing minor, so I would love to do something in sports marketing. My favorite sport is AFL. It’s Australian football. My favorite club team is the Richmond Tigers. It’s just such a different sport. It’s a hybrid of rugby, NFL, soccer and handball.
