49th Annual NCGA Public Links Championship
Austin Roberts | Bayonet and Spyglass Hill | March 31-April 1
Monterey’s Austin
Roberts was clutch when it mattered the most. The first-round co-lead-
er was still tied for the lead going into the final hole at Bayonet. But Roberts stuck his 65-yard approach to 3 feet and sank the birdie putt for a one-shot win over Hayden Shieh. “This is a big win for
me,” said Roberts, who fin- ished the weather-battered event with a two-day total of 2-over 146 (73-73). “I feel like all the hard work I’ve done the last few weeks has paid off.”
It was the second win Austin Roberts
Roberts, 21, bagged in nine days. Roberts also won the Jim Lathum Salinas City Amateur at Salinas Fair- ways on March 23.
Roberts opened with an adventurous 1-over 73 at a wet and windy Spyglass, overcoming a triple-bogey on No. 8 with three birdies and an eagle. Then Roberts came to Bayonet, a course he works at part-time as a cart attendant. After two bogeys in the first eight holes, Roberts logged nine straight pars before his birdie on No. 18 won it. “I felt comfortable because I trust my swing,” Roberts
said. “This course can eat you alive if you put it in the wrong spot,” Roberts said. “In these conditions, I just wanted to make sure I didn’t give any shots away.” Shieh began the day one back and made a change with
four birdies. But the senior at Mission San Jose and Youth on Course alum also had three bogeys and a double to shoot 73 and stay alone in second, one shot back. Three-time Public Links winner and first-round co-leader Scott Hardy finished third after a closing 76.

San Francisco City Golf Championship Shintaro Ban (Men), Casie Cathrea (Women) | Presidio | Feb. 22-March 9
Shintaro Ban captured the
biggest win of his amateur career yet, while Casie Cathrea some- how topped last year’s dominat- ing performance. Ban, a senior at Archbishop
Mitty, went 4 under through his first five holes Sunday at Presidio Golf Course and never looked back, capturing the men’s title with a decisive 8-and-7 win over Rick Reinsberg. “It’s one of the biggest wins of
Shintaro Ban
my career so far,” said Ban, who just turned 18. “I’ve seen so many of the names who won here back in the day. Rick’s name is up there. I’d be happy to lose to him. This is a huge win for my confidence.” The No. 32 seed rolled in the 36-hole final, building a 6-up lead through 16 holes. “Shin played really well. He
hardly missed a shot. He’s super talented,” said Reinsberg, the No. 27 seed. “I’ve played (Jo- seph) Bramlett, (Spencer) Levin and J.B. Holmes, and Shin is up there with those guys at this point in his career.” Ban made a huge statement in
the second round of the champi- onship when he eliminated No. 1 seed and defending champion William Brueckner, 1 up. “That was the most important
match,” Ban said. “That win gave me a lot of confidence.” Cathrea cruised to her second
straight S.F. City title, defeating No. 3 seed and Junior Tour of Northern California standout Anna Zhou, 10 and 9. Last year, the No. 1-seeded Cathrea won her finals match, 10 and 8. “Anna’s a good player. I just had everything working to-
day,” said Cathrea, who joins Sally Krueger and Pat Cornett as the only back-to-back winners of the championship. “I know the history of the event and I wanted to repeat what I did last year.” Only 3-up after the morning round, the 18-year-old
Livermore resident and former three-time Junior Tour of Northern California Player of the Year overwhelmed Zhou to open the second 18, winning the first three holes to go 6-up. In the Senior championship, No. 29-seeded Jim Williams
took the title via a 7-and-6 win over No. 15 Steve Schroeder. The Super Senior Championship crown was won by No. 11 seed Ely Orquiza, who knocked off No. 1 seed Ron Johnson, 5 and 3. Johnson is the defending NCGA Super Senior Championship.
