The NCGA’s Rules and
Competitions Department is very excited to set up championships on the new and improved Poppy Hills, a golf course that now has more teeing grounds, more hole locations and more shot selections than ever before.

Setting up the New Poppy Hills for Tournaments
efore we begin hosting championships, we will confer with the maintenance staff to determine the best hole locations, which depend on green speed and firmness. We will then determine yardages for each hole, with the hopes of getting golfers to use every club in their bag. Here are a few ideas we are already considering: • With five new tees on every hole, we can turn a hole
such as the dogleg-left 14th hole, which plays 385 yards from the back (Jones) tee, into a potentially drivable 291-yard par 4 (1 Poppy). The shorter tee would make No. 14 a great risk- reward hole, as four bunkers surround the smallest green on the course. • The new ninth green has a rock-bed creek fronting the
left side of it. We can already imagine many exciting hole lo- cations all along the left side of the green to tease big hitters trying to reach the downhill 535-yard par 5 in two. • The par 3s range from 161 yards (No. 11) to 223 yards
(No. 15) from the Jones Trail, and all five holes will require a different club. The 11th hole can also play as short as 99 yards. • The longest par 4 at Poppy Hills is the beastly 478-yard
fifth hole, and it usually plays into the wind. But we can ad- just for tournament play and move the tees forward to make it more reachable. We could also counter by tucking the flag toward the edge of the green, either to the left against a bracketing bunker, or to the right over a bunker and a native waste area that covers a hillside. We are also aware that the new greens at Poppy Hills
will most likely play firm initially and won’t be as receptive to longer shots. While a front hole location may shorten the hole, it will be difficult to stop the ball close without backspin. Many of the new greens at Poppy Hills have grown in
size, both in acreage and available hole locations. The middle of the old third green was un- usable because of a large hump, but the new putting surface is much flatter, giving us many more hole locations in the front, middle and back. Our staff will vary the hole locations throughout the round, provid- ing plenty of front, back, left and right positions to create greater shot value. As you can imagine, we
can’t wait to set up champion- ships at the new and improved Poppy Hills.
