Global Hot Springs Forum Hot springs are found in virtually every country on earth, yet there is zero hard data on how many there are in total. One thing for sure is that hot springs are experiencing hot growth. In 2012, China made hot springs one of the ten pillars of its national tourism organisation and in Japan, they now represent the single largest sector of the domestic tourism industry. The forum will reveal how operators can

build profi table businesses and ask, since some countries have clear regulations and guidelines and most do not, how we can forge global best practice resource usage guidelines? Forum co-organiser Charles Davidson says: “Knowledge on how to best utilise and develop hot springs resources varies considerably from country to country. This forum presents a huge opportunity for knowledge sharing that can spur economic and community development, harness this growth, and share the potential globally.”

Global Spa Retail Forum

The overwhelming majority of spas now have a retail element and recent Day Spa Association data shows a much larger profi t margin in retail, 50-100% compared with 40-50% in treatments. However, it seems this opportunity is not being exploited. In the US, for example, retail has long

made up only about 10% of total spa revenues. Sponsored by Natura Bissé, this forum will

discuss what more successful spa retailing might look like; the best way to balance physical store environments and e-commerce; how to take advantage of the latest retail technology innovations; and how smarter brand partnerships could drive growth Forum co-organiser Jeff Matthews says: “Spa

retail is still stuck in the Dark Ages. The current retail landscape and consumer shopping behavior are changing dramatically; spas and spa product companies have so much to problem-solve.”

Global Spa Education Forum Lori Hutchinson and Jeremy McCarthy have conducted extensive research on spa internship, mentoring programs and career paths and will ask how better communications could spur more people to join spa management. Meanwhile, Lynne McNees, president of ISPA,

led a spa certifi cation workgroup, involving industry leaders across the world, to establish criteria for global accreditation of spa managers. Findings will be presented, and the forum will explore how a global spa management certifi cation program could best be rolled out. Forum organiser Anna Bjurstam says: “This subject is crucial because if the industry does

not get more organised and aggressive with its internship and mentoring programs, to ensure our future leaders get the right education and are nurtured on their career path, it cannot grow.”

Global Hydro-Thermal Forum

Hydro-thermal experiences stand at the heart of ‘classic spa’ and spa owners, investors, developers and consultants will explore the hottest emerging issues and trends across the hydrothermal world. The questions will be asked: what is

‘hydrotherapy’ really; and should the industry make moves to separate the ‘toys’ from those experiences that have been proven to be benefi cial to spa owners and consumers? Also, what is the real return-on-investment for spas with top-end hydro-thermal areas? Hygiene and health in hydro-thermal areas will be discussed and the forum will examine evidence-based medical studies supporting diverse hydro-thermal experiences, to ask if they should be as critical a component at medical spas as in traditional spas?

Co-organiser Don Genders says: “This Forum

will promote a new openness within the competitive hydro-thermal industry that most perceive is lacking. We have much to discuss including issues around design and safety and returns on investment.”
