specification by brands such as Molton Brown, GAP and Mulberry all had challenging factors. Often it’s the elements of design detailing that go unnoticed to the untrained eye that provide the most difficult challenges. Creating a seamless looking feature or sourcing a particular Kelvin temperature LED for the panel which matches the interior scheme being specified. Our RGB panels can be programmed to run dazzling colour-changing sequences too. Our technical team recently worked on a tiled wall and ceiling system for design agency Karmarama that ripples as each section of LED Light Sheet has been programmed individually; in fact, this project was featured previously in A1 Lighting.

A1: How did you overcome it? What’s your most successful recent project?

Carole: A recent project involving the www.a1lightingmagazine.com

renovation of the gift shop at Durham Cathedral used LED Light Sheet in all product display cabinets and it looked stunning on completion. The shop relocation and transformation was part of a £1.2 million renovation by architectural practice Purcell who designed the oak display cabinets themselves. LED Light Sheet fulfils a number of purposes in the shop: in some cabinets, the lighting unit provides a cool running illuminated surface on which products such as jewellery can be presented; in other cabinets it is used to cast light down onto shelves or illuminate cabinet backs, particularly of perimeter display units. Vanessa Ward, who is the business support manager at Durham Cathedral, has told us that since reopening the shop last year, sales for the key Christmas period showed a 59% increase against the same period in 2011.

A1: What does the future hold for Applelec?

Ian: We have a number of new products launching in 2013 across the various industries we work with and we’re continually researching and developing new products to bring to market. In reaching 15 years of trading I’m grateful to still get such a kick out of what we do, and, in many ways it feels as though we are just getting started. We’ve built up a strong customer base, one that’s grown with us slowly and organically over the years as most of our customers have found us through word of mouth referrals. And of course, we’ll be out and about at several exhibitions this year, including The ARC Show at the May Design Series in May, so we’ll no doubt be keeping busy!
