The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Slipper, MP, has stood aside while criminal and civil allegations against him are being investigated. Mr James Ashby, a former staff member in Mr Slipper’s office, claims that he was sexually harassed by Mr Slipper. In addition, Mr Ashby alleges that Mr Slipper has misused Cabcharge vouchers. On 22 April, Mr Slipper
released a statement in which he emphatically denied the allegations. Mr Slipper stated that “any allegation of criminal behaviour is grave and should be dealt with in a manner that shows appropriate regard to the integrity of our democratic institutions and to precedent. I propose to ask the Deputy Speaker as Deputy Speaker and members of the Speaker's panel to assist in chairing the proceedings of the House. There is much more to be done and I look forward to completing what I have begun. I present a copy of my statement

I believe I am entitled, like any other person, to have the presumption of innocence. I am also entitled to have these matters dealt with by proper process. It is unfortunate that trial by media seems to have become the order of the day in this country. As Speaker I have sought to improve the standing
