ARTISTIC LICENCE ENGINEERING BOW ARTS TRUST LONDON, UK

Statement Lighting

Bow Arts Trust commissioned architectural LED feature lighting specialists Technical Entertainment Services (TES) to refurbish an installation suspended over a public walkway between its two buildings in Bow Road. The system of vertical tubes of light is a permanent installation that was originally created using fluorescent tubes, but the Trust wanted the installation to be more environmentally efficient. “Bow Arts Trust wanted to replace the existing fluorescent tubes with an LED alternative that would better comply with their environmental concerns, and offer extended lamp life with reduced maintenance and running costs,” explains TES Technical Director, Matthew Owen. Owen decided that the best solution for the installation would be a multi-pixel RGB fixture, which would allow Artists in Residence to get involved in the artistic direction of the installation. Owen researched a number of international and UK manufacturers for a suitable product and found that the modular Multichrome Tube fittings from Artistic Licence Engineering provided an excellent solution. The Multichrome Tube is a linear LED fixture available in a variety of customised lengths and configurations, including single

or double sided strips and a choice of pixel pitches. Therefore, the product allowed the client the right level of flexibility to alter the design as needed.

A total of ten 500mm and twenty 1000mm customised RGB LED Multichrome Tubes were specified by Owen. Despite the tubes standard 1P67 rating, they were made even more rugged for the installation by Artistic Licence Engineering to provide additional waterproofing. This meant the tubes were entirely suitable for the long-term outdoor installation. The only controllers needed for the thirty Multichrome Tube installation were three Artistic Licence E2 Art-Net controllers, which made life easy for Owen. “Instead of having an individual controller for each tube, all I needed to do was link ten tubes to each E2 box, then link each box with data cable and connect directly to my computer,” explains Owen.
