ROBE SOWETO THEATRE GAUTENG, SOUTH AFRICA

In the Spotlight

Robe gets involved in a project that has been three years in the making, lighting the Soweto Theatre in Gauteng, South Africa.

Robe is a truly international lighting company, getting involved in projects across the world. Recently, Robe moving lights have been specified and installed at the new Soweto Theatre, a 150 million South Africa Rand project that was three years in the making. The project brings an exciting new arts and cultural space to the already buzzing Jabulani district of Soweto in Gauteng, South Africa. 30 x ROBIN 300 LEDWashes and 12 ROBIN 600E Spots were

specified by lighting designer Denis

Hutchinson, who acted as lighting consultant for the project. The theatre has three performance spaces in total – a 420 seat main pros arch auditorium and two studio venues with a capacity of 180 and 90 respectively. The fixtures will be used across all three spaces. When it came to organising the lighting equipment tender, Hutchinson wanted to leave as much flexibility as possible in the overall concept, so those companies putting forward proposals could really

emphasise the strengths of their various products.

When the tender process was complete, Hutchinson assessed what proposals offered value for money in the context of the venue’s needs. DWR, Robe’s South African distributor, won the tender to supply the bulk of the lighting package. Hutchinson has worked with a wide variety of moving lights in his numerous design projects, and so has a real feel for Robe as well as the other moving lights on offer. He

comments; “Robe is a very solid and reliable brand in my experience, and units certainly need to be robust in this

environment, where they will be in almost daily use for many different scenarios”. There was a desire with this project to ensure that the lighting system was as green as possible, so the low power consumption of the LEDWash 300 and ROBIN 600E Spots was a real benefit. Day-to-day, the new lighting system is being looked after by house Lighting

Technician Nkululeko Mazibuko, who trained at Johannesburg’s landmark Market Theatre. DWR also supplied a number of generic lights, dimmers, a grandMA lite and two ultra-lite consoles for control for the theatre.

Green Fact:

The ROBIN 600E Spots used at the theatre are brighter in output compared to the equivalent 700 Watt series discharge spot, and consume considerably less power. www.a1lightingmagazine.com
