account the 20-30% drop in light output due to thermal and optical losses. This is different from traditional lamp technologies, in which the lamp lumens remain the same regardless. LED specifications are not made up, but it is vital that you test the finished product. There is no doubt that a number of inexpensive luminaires coming onto the market have never been near a photometry lab!

A1: How can you help clients to save time and money when designing their luminaires? GJ: It is a simple model. To build, equip and staff a photometric test laboratory to the level that is required to meet current and future standards can require a significant investment. An independent test lab like ours provides an on-demand service with the added benefit that you can exploit our team of photometry experts as an extension of your own R&D team. We often work with clients at an early stage in the development of new products in order that the final performance of the product is optimised. As an independent laboratory, we operate to strict quality management procedures in order that our clients can have complete confidence in our measurement results. We observe all of the latest international standards, such as IES LM-79-08 and EN 13032, and our

measurements are made with reference to standards that are traceable to National Measurement Institutes such as NPL and NIST. A test report from Photometric Testing carries a lot of weight, giving our clients a competitive advantage in the market.

A1: What does the future hold for Photometric Testing?

GJ: This is an exciting time in the lighting industry. Energy efficiency regulations are driving demand for products that extract more useful lumens from lower electrical Watts. Photometric Testing is ideally placed to serve the need in the UK and wider European lighting industry for cost- effective, accurate and traceable photometric test data. We will continue to invest in our facility and test equipment to keep abreast of the latest standards and industry best practice. We expect to grow our team as the demand for our services continues to rise. The future is bright – as are the lighting products we enjoy testing!

No client will be happy if our test results under-state the performance of their fitting, which would be the case if we hadn’t invested in a state-of-the- art facility and the very latest photometric test equipment.
