welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT

“Earl’s Court will be awash with suppliers who’ve been desperate to talk about their

contribution to the Games but have had to keep schtum”

THE OLYMPICS, then. London 2012. You won’t read much about it here, I’m afraid. In fact, chances are you won’t read a great deal anywhere about the pro-audio industry’s involvement with the ‘summer of sport’. Not until after the Closing Ceremony – which, fittingly enough, coincides with the first day of PLASA. I imagine Earl’s Court will be awash with manufacturers and suppliers who’ve been desperate to talk about their contribution to the Games but have had to keep schtum until 9 September. However, if anyone cantell us about pro-audio anywhere at the Games, Coca-Cola can. Fizzy fan Phil Ward was given exclusive access to the fascinating Beatbox installation at the Olympic Park. Pop along to page 41 for the story. Meanwhile, Kevin Hilton talked to the sound designer behind The Swimmer, a film created for the Cultural Olympiad . Page 17 for more depth on that. But other than those stories, all PSNEuropecan do in terms of coverage is say what we see. Those were quite clearly L-Acoustics V-DOSC/ARCS hangs at the Opening Ceremony, with KUDO and SB28s on the ground. And the installed PA looked very much like Electro-Voice EVH enclosures, about 100 or so boxes I would say. Paul McCartney was singing through the distinctive head of a Shure beta58; the Arctic Monkeys most definitely weren’t. (All wired mics too, did you notice?)

If you want to know more... you’ll just have to wait. As will we. Sigh. Now, has anyone got a spare ticket? I’ll be damned if I can buy one off the bloody website… Dave Robinson
