The newly-created Eligible Studio Producers Form ensures producers are properly paid for qualifying non-audile contributions, writes Erica Basnicki


SINCE 2002, a producer’s non- audible contributions to a record have been eligible for royalty payments. However, supplying confirmation of those contributions to PPL has historically not been administratively easy for studio producers to do. To that end, PPL has created the Eligible Studio Producers Form, designed to provide evidence of a studio producer’s performance at the time of recording. The new initiative has the full support of the Music Producers Guild (MPG). “A producer has always been


able to qualify, but many producers didn’t realise that they qualified, or how they qualified, and that was the problem,” says Steve Levine, chairman of the MPG. “There have been recent examples of major artists querying the rights of the studio music producer to receive this equitable remuneration on previous, often legacy, sound recordings they worked on. These have been dealt with by PPL on a case-by-case basis, as very often there is little or no documentation, and the memory of events and the original sessions can change over time. This has resulted in substantial additional

Alchemea College has partnered with Anglia Ruskin University to provide its Studio Sound Diploma graduates with a degree pathway. Any student that has passed Alchemea’s Diploma in Studio Sound Engineering since 2007 may be eligible to enroll on to year two of Anglia Ruskin’s BSc (Hons) Audio and Music Technology. The university is currently building a new recording studio complex, which will be ready for their next degree intake in October 2012. www.alchemea.com


Scotland-based Castlesound Studios has installed aSolid State Logic AWS 948 hybrid


console/controller, recently used to complete music tracks for Pixar’s feature Brave. The AWS 948 replaces an original AWS 900, providing the studio with an expanded channel count to adequately handle larger
