4 The joint force behind sensing show Comment
A LEADING PUBLISHING house and a major exhibition organiser have joined forces to run the national exhibition for sensors and instrumentation. The part- nership between Datateam Business Media and Trident Exhibitions brings together the expertise of two companies with years of experience in this field. They will jointly run a focused national event.
“This partnership can only benefit the industry providing a focused exhibition targeting a dedicated audience," said Helen Thewlis, managing director, Trident Exhibitions.
"Trident
has worked closely with Datateam for our successful Mtec and Instrumentation shows in the past so this partnership is a
logical extension of this success- ful relationship.” For 2012 Trident will focus its efforts on this joint enterprise and therefore the Sensors & Systems show at Silverstone this October will not take place. Trident and Datateam will work together on the Sensing Technology exhibi- tion at the NEC on 25th and 26th September, and will announce the new show for 2013 at this event. Kathy Ambrose, publishing director, Datateam Business Media, said: "This partnership has been built on mutual respect and understanding of the market. The UK needs a major sensing & instrumentation event and together we can provide that. The future looks very exciting."

Rewarding the future stars of engineering
The younger generation often suffer from bad press, with the fear that we are breeding a ‘lost generation’ perpet- uated by the media. So, how refreshing to be present at the Bosch Technology Horizons Award, where a group of 14- 24 year olds were rewarded for their contributions to the world of engineer- ing. The winners of the essay writing competition are detailed in the news story below and some of the winning entries will be published in forthcoming issues of Process & Control, so you can see for yourselves the high quality of the essays submitted. With the results of the IChemE 2012 salary survey showing overall trends in chemical engineering pay are positive as salaries continue to rise (the median salary for the 2500 chemical engineers participating in the survey was £53,000/pa com- pared to £50,000/pa in 2010), young people could do a lot worse than pur- sue a career in engineering. Recent figures published by UCAS report that UK university applications to study chemical and process engineer- ing have risen by 12% this year, despite an overall drop in applications across all subjects, so maybe the mes- sage is getting through. THE WINNERS OF the 2012 Bosch Technology Horizons Award have been announced at a ceremony held at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London earlier this month. First prize in the 14 to 18 age group went to Abraham Emdon from Torquay Boys Grammar School who won £700, whilst Cole Soutter from Warwick University took home £1,000 as winner of the 19 to 24 age group. Each participant was tasked with submitting an imaginative response to an engineering related essay question. Abraham chose to address the effect of human activities on the planet whilst exploring how our behav-
iour towards the environment is changing. Cole discussed the potential legacy of the Olympic games and the initiatives put in place to ensure it has a lasting and positive impact on the UK. Two runners-up were also rewarded – Max Lowther from Bishop Luffa School in Chichester named in the 14 to 18 age group, along with Nicola Guttridge from Imperial College London in the 19 to 24 age cate- gory. A total of 14 finalists were recognised. The Award is designed to show young people that engineering offers a rewarding career path.

BUSINESS SECRETARY VINCE Cable backed calls for the manu- facturing sector to ‘Make it in Great Britain’ during his speech at the Siemens ‘Answers for Industry’ conference VIP event in Manchester this month. The event itself focused on encouraging long-term growth and rebalancing the economy towards a stronger manufacturing sector. Vince Cable said: “The key to a sustainable and balanced econ- omy is having a long term approach to growth, investing in manufacturing technology, R&D and skills so we have the right talent to make the most of recov- ery. Working with business, we are taking steps to strengthen the UK’s manufacturing capability, ensuring a better business envi- ronment that will address barriers to growth, encourage innovation, exports and inward investment as well as build UK supply chains.”
