Comments October: Behind the Scenes

ILOVEDTHEINSIGHTSYOU sharedabout Aspen Institute, espe- cially as it relates to life experiences. Iamfinding that more and more organizations are taking the time to listen to andlearn from the collec- tive experiences (both professional andpersonal) their employees bring to the workplace. It is amazing to see how this type of collaboration is transforming organizations as they discover talents, ideas, and knowl- edge never before uncovered. PCMA@LinkedIn:Who Writes the Learning Objectives?

CHRISTINA HAKE,MANAGER of events andcorporate relations at the California HeadStart Associa- tion, recently posedthis question to PCMA’s LinkedIn group: “Who writes the learning objectives in your association for workshops at a conference? The presenter or the association?” Hereare someof therespons- es that she received:

I have always askedthe presenter to write the objectives, but I have given them this template: “At the end of this session the participant will be

Then, when I get their draft, I edit, edit, edit.Myacademic training is in adult and continuing education, so I do a lot of rewriting, editing, and actually a lot of cutting.Doyou think that it wouldbe helpful at one of our meeting-professional confer- ences to offer a workshop on how to help your speakers/presenters in this way? WEJUSTHAD30 SPEAKERS submit their video presentations and learning objectives for a virtual con- ference we are doing in two weeks. It was interesting to see the speakers’ perspectives, andwe have the opportunity to ensure that the video matches the objectives they felt they covered. There were a few rewrites, but most of them did a great job in sharing their passion both in the written word and on camera. Linda Elland President A2Z Meetings&Events

SOMETHINGTOBE CAUTIOUS of in this area: ensuring the speaker ends up talking to the final learning objectives. This is especially perti- nent if you take the speaker’s origi- nal objectives andtweak them a bit. I’ve seen situations where in the planning phase, the speaker says, “Yes, yes, of course I can change the presentation to fit your revised objectives.” Andthen months later they come in and deliver exactly what they had initially planned, with no changes. This can result in some disappointed attendees who had expected different content. Claudia Rizzo Trapp Senior Director, Programs and Education International Registration Plan
