When safety is paramount and required to conform to increasing amounts of new legislation, Finder’s 7S Series forcibly guided contact relays are said to offer a competitively priced and compact solution for designers and engi- neers who require confirmation of the functional integrity of critical cir- cuitry. Class A forcibly guided con- tacts rated at 6A, 250VAC and conforming to EN50205 require- ments, make the 7S Series suitable for many safety related applications. www.findernet.com

The new Elesa CFSW IP67 180° hinge has its own built-in multiple safety switch, so that in the event of accidental opening of a control cabinet door, machine panel or safety door, it automatically shuts off the power so protecting the operators of machinery and produc- tion equipment. The CFSW is paired with its equivalent mechani- cal hinge, the CFMW so creating a tough, safe installation. The CFSW is double insulated and approved AC15 (IEC 60947-5- 1) and DC13 (IEC 60947-5-2) for usage up to 400V-4A (AC15). It is available with different combina- tions of contacts with positive opening (2NO+2NC, 1NO+3NC etc). These robust units are tested to over one million operating cycles, are totally tamper-proof. www.elesanow.co.uk

Inaugural Machinery Safety Alliance seminar a success

about preventing people getting hurt by machines at work. The complicated part comes when safety functions have to be designed, verified and vali- dated, which we seek to demystify during our semi- nars, but on the whole our aim is to address the wide range of issues, standards and technologies relevant to machine safety. Safety really can improve productivity as well as protect people, and we hope that our pragmatic approach offers some guidance to achieving both without becoming a sales pitch.”

With a full audience of over 50, the inaugural Machinery Safety Alliance ‘blast off’ seminar at Leicester’s National Space Exhibition went safely into orbit. Founding members Pilz Automation Technology, Festo, Fortress Interlocks, Werma and Troax all made presentations to a diverse audience comprising automotive, paper making & converting, food, packaging, consultative, building materials, material handling and automation sectors. The Health and Safety Laboratory opened and closed proceedings, giving a unique perspective to what has been a well-received event.

Founder of the group, David Collier (Pilz), said: “Overall, machine safety is not rocket science; it’s

The group was formed in early 2012 as a non- profit organisation with the stated mission: “to make sense of safety, to safeguard productivity” via its website and educational seminars. Amongst the positive feedback received for the first seminar, perhaps the best praise was that the seminars provided a good balance of information without being a sales pitch. “We aren’t just a ‘prod- uct road show’, we’re non-profit and educational - this is the spirit of our organisation,” stated Collier. If you haven’t already considered or booked into one of the Machinery Safety Alliance seminars, you can find out more by visiting the website. The next events take place on the 27 June at the Concord Conference Centre in Manchester, and on the 5th September at Explore@Bristol. www.machinery-safety-alliance.co.uk

Celestica recognises Brady with a TCOO supplier award

Brady Corporation has announced it has been awarded a 2011 Total Cost of Ownership (TCOO) Supplier Award from Celestica, a global leader in the delivery of end-to-end product lifecycle solutions. Celestica's awards programme recognises suppliers that support Celestica's TCOO sourcing strategy to pro- vide its customers with the best possible supply chain solution for their products.

“Brady is very proud to receive this award from Celestica,” said Paul Rombouts, managing direc- tor of Brady EMEA. “We see this as recognition for both the quality of our high-performance identifi- cation solutions, as well as our

dedication to delivering unri- valled customer service. Both ele- ments are the foundations underpinning our Brady brand, and to gain this award for the second year in succession is a real testament to the determination and passion of our employees to enable our customers to operate more efficiently and profitably.” This marks the sixth year of Celestica’s TCOO Supplier Awards programme, which eval- uates and recognises the top per- formers in Celestica’s global network of over 3,000 suppliers. Celestica’s TCOO system is focused on evaluating supplier performance by measuring the total cost to produce, deliver and

support products and services beyond the supplier invoice price. As such, it considers the following supplier attributes: quality, delivery, technology, ser- vice, pricing and flexibility. “Congratulations to Brady for being recognised with a 2011 TCOO Supplier Award,” said Craig Muhlhauser, President and CEO, Celestica. “I sincerely thank Brady for supporting our strategy to drive speed and responsive- ness throughout the supply chain, which ultimately provides our customers with the flexibility they need to respond to fluctua- tions in end-market demand and overcome any challenge.” www.bradyeurope.com

Ralspeed sounds warning over rented pump starters Operators of temporary pump installations may be

risking injury to personnel and damage to equip- ment if they use rented motor starters without first ensuring that these incorporate essential safety fea- tures such as earth-leakage protection and effective short-circuit protection, says Peter Schaffel, manag- ing director of motor control expert, Ralspeed. “Almost by definition, pumps operate in damp areas,” says Schaffel, “so it’s the height of folly to use a starter that lacks earth-leakage protection. In fact, if a serious accident occurred when such a starter was in use, it’s very likely that the absence of earth-leak-

age protection would be seen as grounds for prosecu- tion under health and safety regulations.” Ralspeed offers a comprehensive range of motor starters for rental at very competitive rates. Ideally suited to pump applications, the units incorporate all essential safety features and offer many addi- tional useful facilities such as remote displays, inte- gral fault logs and an option for remote monitoring via the mobile telephone network. Ralspeed also manufactures and supplies standard and bespoke starters and starter systems for outright purchase. www.ralspeed.com
