From the President

Yoshiaki C. Kubota Orange County Trial Lawyers Association Orange County Trial Lawyers:

From the Capitol to the golf course Assembly Insurance Committee Chairman Solorio (D-Santa Ana) killed consumer-friendly UM legislation In May 2011, 45 lawyers from Orange

County attended the CAOC’s Justice Day and 50th Anniversary dinner. It was a concentration of California’s best trial lawyers spanning almost three generations. Justice Day was a wonderful success and

many Orange County lawyers had an opportunity to meet their state legislators and discuss various issues. One of the “highlights” of the day was the meeting with Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-69th District - Santa Ana). Since May 2009 Jose Solorio has chaired the Assembly Insurance Committee. On May 4, we learned that he had made a

motion to reassign for further consideration a consumer-friendly bill (AB 1063) on Uninsured Motorist insurance, essentially killing the bill. In a recent article in the Orange County Register, Underinsured Motorist Coverage: A raw deal for California Drivers? (May 26, 2011), Sacramento correspondent Brian Joseph reported that Jose Solorio raised $79,000 (11 percent of his fund raising) from the insurance industry during the 2009-2010 cycle. There have been several articles about Mr. Solorio’s committee vote, as follows: http://taxdollars.ocregister.com/2011/05/26/ underinsured-motorist-coverage-a-raw-deal-for- california-drivers/83709/; http:// www.pifc.org/media/pdfiles/2011/AB1063 BradfordOpposeLetter.pdf; and http:// www.theliberaloc.com/2011/05/05/solorio-helps- insurance-companies-win-consumers-lose-on- under-insured-motorist-vote/

Orange County Trial Lawyers are proceeding as planned. On October 10, 2011, the Orange County Trial Lawyer Association is hosting its annual Bench and Bar Golf Tournament at the El Niguel Country Club. The tournament has always sold out quickly and we are anticipating the same this year. We have two special golf

guests this year: Alan Brown of Day Day & Brown and Keith More of Berman, More & Gonzalez. I have been told that these two special guests will wow the crowds with their incredible long shots and hole-in-one tricks. Then, on November 19, the Orange County

Trial Lawyers Association is hosting its annual Top Gun Awards Dinner at the St. Regis Hotel and Resort in Dana Point. This year, the proceeds of the auction will go to the Down Syndrome Association of Orange County and United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County. Both charitable organizations have been long-standing supporters of the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association. Nominations for Orange County's top trial lawyers are now being accepted. I look forward to seeing you at these exciting

events.

Moving forward Despite this legislative setback, the
