4 The Lutheran • www.thelutheran.org T

he Lutheran ventured a little further into the world of electronic communications at the start of the new year by offering print and

Web subscribers a digital edition of the magazine. The digital edition is an online presentation of

the print magazine. You can “flip” through it by clicking the bottom corners of pages to turn forward or backward, or you can use directional arrows to browse through it. It’s similar to sales “catalogs” sent via e-mail by companies such as Home Depot and Lands’ End.

It comes with a couple of advantages over the printed version, such as active links to more information via the Web. Simply click highlighted text and you’ll be taken to that site in a pop-up browser. This is used throughout the edition, in both editorial content and advertising. The magazine has operated a website (www.thelutheran.org) since 1996,

offering subscribers full access to the current issue and archived editions from that date onward. Subscribers also enjoy unlimited study guide downloads, article and blog commenting and can e-mail full-text articles to others. Reader Rick Lund of San Antonio picked up on the digital edition in early January: “Thank you for the new digital edition via QuadGraphics (the com- pany that prints The Lutheran expanded its business to Internet presentations). … [Pages] can easily be enlarged for tired eyes to read. … Blessings to all of you as you strive to unite our church using varieties of media formats.” Note: this is not free. If you have an individual print subscription or a group/bulk print subscription through your congregation, all you need to do is use the 11-digit number from your mailing label to create a login for full access to the site. We also sell Web-only subscriptions, at a reduced price, for both individuals and congregations. If you want to “go green,” this is it. For details, check out our website under “Subscribe” at the top right on the home page.

Why is there a charge for this? The Lutheran is self-funded; we get no sup- port from the ELCA other than free office space. In addition to staff, we pay people to write, shoot photos and create illustrations for us, and others to print and mail the magazine to you as well as run the website. We make that happen by selling subscriptions and advertising. The digital edition isn’t the end of the line for electronic delivery of the magazine. We’ll make every effort to keep pace with advancements in technology.

But just as some members want to receive news,

features and other information online, another large group prefers the feel of paper, the smell of ink. We hope to keep both audiences informed and happy. M
