F

or All the S Irène Kraemer

aints...

Born in Paris in 1947, Irène loved French culture and thrived on urban life. She got caught up in the student movement at the Sorbonne in the late 1960s. Yet, when she met her “American cowboy,” she abandoned the glamor of her girlhood and moved to Wisconsin, where she spent the rest of her life raising two daughters and teaching French at Carthage.

Hers was an electric presence in the classroom. A born actress and performer, she could get young Americans to understand her French when they did not understand a word she said. She became a Dean and Vice President, and no obstacle was insurmountable when she focused on her goal.

Both Irène and her husband, Marty, were the children of holocaust survivors. They knew how to fight and how to live. She stretched her struggle with breast cancer another ten years beyond her doctors’ expectations before succumbing at age 57.

Gifts from her friends and colleagues enable Carthage to award scholarships each year in her name. And, thanks to Irène’s and Marty’s own generosity, other students have the opportunity to build their futures at Carthage.

Planned and estate gifts to Carthage, such as will inclusions, charitable gift annuities and trusts, and life insurance, provide ideal opportunities to benefit you and the College. Call Dr. Jim Unglaube at 1-800-551-1518, or write to him at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin 53140.
