the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was born Jean Ann Varner in Goldsboro, N.C., and received an associate’s degree in 1965 from the old Kinman Busi- ness College in Spokane, Wash. She had been a Fairfax County resident since 1983. Survivors include herhusband


of 42 years, William V. Ferris of Fairfax County; twochildren, Jar- ed Ferris of Alexandria and Brook Ferris of Madison, Wis.; and two brothers.

Mr.Wallick wrote often about workplace safety and was the author of the book “The Ameri- canWorker: An Endangered Spe- cies” (1972), which was repub- lished in 1984 and retitled “Don’t Let Your Job Kill You.” During the 1970s and ’80s, he


led groups of union members, activists and scholars on trips to Sweden to study workplace safety conditions. Earlier in his career, he lived inMilwaukee and was an editor of the Congress of Industri- al Organizations’ newsletter for the state of Wisconsin. He was a Wisconsin state coordinator for the 1960 presidential campaign of Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D- Minn.). He was born Walter Franklin


Wallick in Des Moines and grew up in Dayton, Ohio. As a member of the Church of the Brethren, he was a conscientious objector dur- ing World War II and spent the war on his family’s farm. After the war, he worked for

DR. ROBERT O. BELSHEIM


Dr.Robert O. Belsheim passed away on November 23, 2010.


He was born in Winnebago County,Iowa, August 26, 1924. After graduation from Iowa State University in 1944 with adegree in mechanical engineering, he was selected for research work at the Naval Research Lab. He enlisted in the Navy with aspecial rank that allowed him to continue this work during the last year of the war.Hespent the years immediately after the war at Purdue University,earning his Ph.D.in1954. Until 1977, Bob continued his work at the NRL, consulting after 1970. He was the author of many academic papers and the recipient of many honors,centering on his research on mechanical stress,especially in submarines and with application to NASA projects.


He never tired of the charms of Washington, DC,orthose of the mid-Atlantic region, and was an inveterate explorer of them. In retirement he added to these steady habits of


local and national driving trips with tours of the Baltic,China and Canada. He spent time with family and friends,and golfed hopefully. He took good care of his long time friend in her decline,and is remembered by her family with gratitude and love.


He enjoyed good health all his life and was self-reliant until his last months.


Bob will be missed by his family and long time friends in the Washington, D.C. area, and in Iowa.


In accordance with his wishes,Bob will be interred next to his parents and paternal grandparents at Winnebago Lutheran Church in Lake Mills,Iowa, near the family farm.

war camp and dodged notice for more than two weeks before he was recaptured. He was released at the end of the war. Col. Steele continued to serve


in the military at duty stations in Europe and throughout the Unit- ed States. His military decorations in-


cluded the Distinguished Flying Cross, nine Air Medals and two PurpleHearts. Col. Steele recalled his mili-


tary service in an unpublished memoir that became the founda- tion for a one-man play that has been performed in London by his nephew, actor Colin Clyde. Gordon Hall Steele Jr. was

On Sunday,December 5, 2010, at Fairfax Hospital, as aresult of injuries in atraffic accident.


Vince was born March 27, 1946 in Allentown, PA,the son of Vincent David Kern and Adele Owens Kern, whose character and values influenced him throughout his life.Vince majored in Political Science at Albright Col- lege,Reading PA,where his interest in government and international affairs,partic- ularly Africa, were developed. He received graduate degrees from George Washington University and the Kennedy School of Govern- ment at Harvard.


Vince’sprofessional career was spent in the Defense Department, where he began as a management intern. He worked as apolicy analyst and manager in International Security Affairs for many years and was amember of the Senior Executive Service.Heserved as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Africa from 1996-98. Throughout his years


of government service,headmired President Kennedy’smodel of an “idealist without illu- sions.”


Vince’sother interests included the St. Louis Cardinals,the Boston Celtics,and jazz, “Amer - ica’sclassical music.” He was alongtime resident of Falls Church, VA where he often enjoyed having coffee and visiting the library since his retirement last year.


He is survived by his wife,Susan Clemmens Kern of Falls Church; adaughter,Gabrielle Kern of Pittsburgh PA and ason, Matthew Kern of Portland OR, with whom he had shared his love of books and music.

Born July 1, 1925 in Des Moines,IAto Clarence Mullahey and Elna (Armstrong) Mul- lahey.Preceded in death by husband, Eugene; daughter,Cynthia Whelpley; son, Eugene Powers II; brother,Gerald Mullahey and sister,Kathleen Mullahey.Survived by daughter and son-in-law,Lynda and Carl Keller;nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Whelp- ley,Serenity Whelpley,Amanda Keller,Carl Keller II, Amelia Keller,Paul Keller,Ashley Powers,Brittany Powers and Eugene Powers III; and one great-granddaughter,Addalyn Keller;daughter-in-law,Becky Powers and son-in-law,Craig Whelpley.Also survived by brother,Joseph (Barbara) Mullahey of Des Moines,IAand two sisters,Mary Edna Pen- dergrass of Durham, NC and Ann (Larry) Schluter of Lakeville,MN.,along with many nieces and nephews.


Patwas always very active in politics and in 1971 she and her family moved to VA where she took aposition with the newly established Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA). Pat’sproudest accomplishment while working for the EPAwas spearheading the


creation and securing the funding from Con- gress for the Senior Environmental Employ- ment (SEE) Program. Once established, she administered grants and managed positions for the SEE program until her retirement in 1995. She was nationally recognized for her achievement and the program continues to serve as amodel for utilizing the talents of seniors throughout the country.


Patnever met achallenge she wouldn’t fight to conquer.Her motto was,“Never say I can’t. Instead, say Ican and then learn to do it.”She was amotivated person and a wonderful Mother,Grandmother,sister and aunt who will be missed by all.
