MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2010 WALLACE TURNER, 89
Won Pulitzer in 1957 as Oregonian reporter
by Keith Thursby Wallace Turner, 89, a tenacious
investigative reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1957 with the Portland Oregonian and who be- came a bureau chief in San Fran- cisco and Seattle for the New York Times, died Sept. 18 at a hospital in Springfield, Ore. The cause of death was not reported. Mr. Turner and fellow Or- egonian re- porter Wil- liam Lambert shared the Pulitzer for lo- cal reporting for their examination of widespread

corruption involving Portland of- ficials and members of the Team- sters Union, who tried to collude with mobsters to establish gam- bling, bootlegging and prostitu- tion operations in the city. The Pulitzer board said the re-
porters “fulfilled their assign- ments despite great handicaps and the risk of reprisal from law- less elements.” “Our focus was on the [county]
district attorney and the hood- lums,” Mr. Turner told the Or- egonian in 1998. “Anytime you take on a district attorney and ac- cuse him of criminal activities, you’ve got a tiger by the tail. It was a hell of a fight.” After winning the Pulitzer, Tur- ner spent a year on a Nieman Fel- lowship in a program at Harvard for midcareer journalists and briefly worked in television. In 1961 and ’62, Mr. Turner was an assistant secretary of Health, Education and Welfare and served as press secretary for Abraham Ribicoff, the first HEW secretary in the Kennedy admin- istration. He returned to journalism to work for the New York Times as a writer and bureau chief in San Francisco and Seattle from 1962 until retiring in the late 1980s. Among the stories he covered were the 1978 shootings of San Francisco Mayor George Mos- cone and Supervisor Harvey Milk by former supervisor Dan White. He also covered the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, writing stories about its prohibi- tion against the ordination of black priests that helped pressure church leaders to change that policy. Wallace L. Turner was born
Elda K. Gardiner HOTEL CASHIER, AVON LADY
Elda K. Gardiner, 96, who
worked in the Washington area as an Avon products representa- tive for more than half a century, died Sept. 5 at a hospital in Min- neapolis after suffering a heart attack.
She had lived in Washington for 69 years until she moved to Wisconsin to live with her daugh- ter two years ago. In addition to selling Avon
products, Mrs. Gardiner worked as a cashier at the Willard Hotel until it closed for a number of years in 1968. She then worked as a cashier at the Occidental Res- taurant and the Hotel Washing- ton until her retirement in 1993. Elda Kormeier was born in Casco, Mo., and quit school at 14 to care for an aunt disabled by ar- thritis. When her aunt died, she moved to St. Louis, where she worked as a housekeeper for the Charles McIntyre family. He worked for Weyerhaeuser, and when he was transferred to Taco- ma, Wash., she moved with the family. After moving to the District in 1939, she continued working for several years as a housekeeper. She was a member of Concor- dia Evangelical Reformed Church, now the United Church, a combined congregation of the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church in Northwest Washington. She married George Gardiner in 1942. They had been separated for many years before his death in 2004. Survivors include two daugh-
ters, Pamela Enger of Ellsworth, Wis., and Trudy Lears of Annapo- lis; a sister; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. — Emma Brown

March 15, 1921, in Titusville, Fla., and grew up in the Ozarks. He re- ceived a bachelor’s degree in jour- nalism from the University of Missouri in 1943. In June that year he married
Pearl Burk. He joined the Army but was discharged early because of asthma. The couple moved to Pearl’s home state of Oregon, and Mr. Turner became a night police re- porter at the Oregonian, which he called “that miserable job” in an interview with the newspaper in 2000. “Underneath the city’s skin there was considerable rot,” he said. “I knew it was there, but no- body really gave a rat’s . . . uh, cared . . . about public corrup- tion.” Journalist Tom Wicker, in his 1975 book “On Press,” said Mr. Turner possessed the perfect in- gredients for a first-rate investi- gative reporter: “a prosecutorial zeal, an urge to seek out the wrongdoer, a rather cynical con- viction that determined search will always find a wrongdoer.” Wicker told how Mr. Turner,
“blunt as a billy club,” reported in 1952 on abuses by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the sale of Indi- an trust lands near the Rogue River in Oregon. The coverage earned him the
first of his two Heywood Broun Awards, given by the Newspaper Guild for reporting that champi- ons the disadvantaged. In 1957, Mr. Turner and Lam-
bert testified before the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee of In- vestigations. Mr. Turner’s com- ments were recounted in “We Band of Brothers,” a 1971 book by journalist Edwin O. Guthman. “Time and again we have been visited in secret places at night by honorable working men who complained of their inability to take action to stop the improper activities of their union leaders,” Turner said. “Without exception, they were in terrible fear that their visits to us might become known to their union’s bosses,” he said. Mr. Turner wrote two books, “Gamblers’ Money — the New Force in American Life” in 1965 and “The Mormon Establish- ment” in 1966. In addition to his wife, survi- vors include two daughters, Kathy Turner of Eugene, Ore., and Betty Turner Everett of Lagu- na Beach, Calif.; a brother; and a granddaughter.

September 20, 1933 - December 20, 2008 "Grief is the price we pay for love." Love? Always, unconditionally. But our sorrow is over the loss of your smile, compassion, strength. Where do we turn now for your kindness, generosity and grace? Where is the steady hand during our family challenges?
