I am a Vietnam War veteran, I am the World War II Historian for the Ameri- cal Division Veterans Association (and its current national commander). The Americal fought in the Pa-
cific in World War II and continues to get its record diminished versus the contribution of the Marines. The current HBO series The Pacific gives short shrift to the actual role the Americal’s 164th Regiment played on Guadalcanal. —Col. David W. Taylor, USAR-Ret. Medina, Ohio
Kansas City Memorial We already have a World War I Memorial [Your Views, May 2010]. On Nov. 21, 1921, more than 100,000 people gathered to watch as Gen. John J. Pershing and other military leaders from the five Allied na- tions dedicated the site in Kansas City, Mo., for a monument to those who had fallen in the Great War. (Two weeks after the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, 1918, Kansas City leaders had first met to plan a lasting tribute to those who’d given their lives in defense of liberty, and in only 10 days they raised more than $2.5 million.) By 1926, construction was com-
plete and President Coolidge deliv- ered the dedication speech to 150,000 people. Through the decades that fol- lowed, veterans and their families, as well as ordinary people, dignitaries, and scholars, all came to honor the sacrifices represented by the Liberty Memorial. In 2004, Congress desig- nated $102 million for the National World War I Museum at the memo- rial. It opened to the public in 2006. —Edward T. Matheny Jr. Kansas City, Mo.
