When you share your opinion via MOAA surveys, your response helps the association plan actions and programs that support you, your family, and all members.

ith more than 370,000 members, MOAA is a large and vibrant association. As president, it’s my job to

keep my finger on the membership’s pulse and ensure we are responsive to members’ needs. Membership surveys are one im- portant way we can listen to you. In the 2009 Annual Membership Letter

that appeared in the February 2010 issue of Military Officer, we invited members to par- ticipate in an informal survey on MOAA’s website. We also heard from many mem- bers who responded via an MOAA Message (an e-mailed notification). Nearly 12,000 members visited the survey. If you’re one of them, thank you for your time and feedback. Ninety-two percent of responders have

been MOAA members for six years or more. The majority of these members are age 50 or older. Approximately 32 percent visit MOAA’s

website at least weekly. Favorite features include the Legislative Update (84 per- cent), Today in the Military (43 percent), and News Exchange (23 percent). MOAA’s most important products and

services were advice on benefits and entitle- ments (58 percent), MOAA Travel (33 per- cent), MOAA chapter events (24 percent), and financial information (22 percent). In this survey, 95 percent of members

said they did not participate in online so- cial media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. However, 22 percent expressed interest in participating in an exclu-

sive MOAA social media network, if one were avail- able, to stay in contact with those with whom they have served. Another 46 percent were undecided, indicating they would need more expo- sure to the subject. The survey also asked

whether or not you would watch on-demand educational webinars on topics of interest, such as Navigating Your TRI- CARE Coverage. Respondents told us definitely yes, with 57 percent indicating an interest in one or more webinars. Finally, when we asked if

you are satisfied with your membership experience, the answer was a resounding yes, with 80 percent of responders rating MOAA highly and saying they would refer MOAA to a fellow officer. On another note, I am sure most of

you have seen or heard Secretary of De- fense Robert Gates’ recent comments to the effect that defense expenditures — including rising personnel and health care costs — need to be reduced and streamlined. We value your opinion; please share it by taking a short survey at www.moaa.org/gatessurvey.
